I'm New Here - First Fertility Clinic Appt on the 30th!

edited December 2015 in Trying to Get Pregnant
Hi! My name is Stephanie, I'm 26 and DH and I have been TTC baby #1 since April. I went off BC in April, and have only had one period since then in June, and then haven't had another one for the past 6 months. This has happened to me before when I have gone off BC in the past, when I wasn't TTC. After 6 months without a period, we decided to make an appt at the fertility clinic, and we have our first appointment on the 30th! I think that it might be PCOS, based on what I've been reading, but I'm really not sure.

Any positive thoughts, stories, or advice, would be greatly appreciated . I look forward to meeting many of you as we all go through this journey!

If you think you have PCOS, you can search PCOS in the search bar as there has been dozens of threads on that topic where you can see what other have been through. I recently was tested for PCOS and they do bloodwork and perform an ultrasound. I didn't have it but there are like 3 or 4 main symptoms and you need have 2 or 3 of them to get diagnosed. It's still possible to get pregnant but PCOS can make it more tricky. Fx that the doctor is able to help. I can imagine it's super frustrating.

It could also be a thyroid problem or a hormone imbalance. Good luck at your first appointment. You'll likely have several vials of blood taken and maybe a transvaginal ultrasound.

Hi and welcome. Please keep us updated. I'm in my 5th cycle in the TWW and have a gyno appointment in Feb. if I don't get my BFP by then I plan to ask for a referral for a specialist. I'm 34. Do you mind my asking, did insurance cover this (are you in US?) if not how much was your visit?
Just curious for my own knowledge. If you don't want to answer I understand. Thanks!

I just finished testing with my OB. My insurance covers all testing towards my deductible, but no IF treatment. I also pay OOP until I meet my deductible, then it's covered at 100%. Here's a rundown of what my costs were:
    ultrasounds-$700-1200 a piece
    progesterone draw-$200
hsg-$1400, but paid in full and got it down to 850
    SA-$120
    office visits-$130-175 a piece

@JRB3- I had coverage for my office visits to a specialist that were covered by my copay of $50.  Any testing was subject to my deductible.  Once an official diagnosis was reached I guess they would not cover for treatment.  When I had my HSG done it was $100 out of pocket to the medical center where I actually had the test done at.  I later saw on the insurance website that the dr who did the HSG billed it as an xray and my total out of pocket to him was $7 or something?? (my deductible had been met by then) but I still haven't received any bills from the RE specifically.  I think iie had a deal worked out with the medical facility where the test was done though, which was why I just had to pay the $100 the day of that test.

I'm still waiting to see what my post coital test is going to cost us.  I paid a $50 copay that day when I got to the RE office. The post coital test was very much like a pap smear and then he did an internal U/S also, which I'm sure is not going to be included in the $50 copay.  I haven't checked the insurance website again though to see if its been billed yet or not.

it's really going to depend on your insurance.  When I was having some issues in Sept, my insurance was different.  That's one of the main reasons I went and did some of the things I did then (blood tests, U/S).  I'd been having some weird pain with sex that I'd never had before and i knew my insurance was changing as of 10/1.  I went to the dr in early Sept, she did an exam and said she didn't see anything but said we could do an U/S just to make sure and I was able to do it before 10/1.  So my U/S was only the $50 copay.  I also had my blood work done and I didn't pay anything for that.

Fast forward to 10/1 and my insurance changing and I had a yeast infection a few weeks ago and I'm getting bills from the dr office for the lab work they sent off for the samples they took.

So it will really depend on your insurance.  Good Luck!

Your story sounds a lot like mine. I came of BC, and over the next year had only three periods. I was referred to a fertility clinic and after a few tests, including a Sonohysterogram (ouch, if you have to do this, don't forget to take an advil... I did), they started on cycle monitoring. They gave me meds for thyroid, prometium to bring on a period and then femara to induce ovulation, then I went in for u/s until they told me I was ovulating. No temping, tests or anything. In the third cycle I tested positive! Also in Canada, so the whole thing cost less than #250. Good luck!

Yes. They were that much. I have an HSA account and pay all OOP until my deductible is met. I still didn't meet my deductible after all that. Save your pennies. It's a costly road.

I am having a Sonohysterogram done on the 13th, but I had no idea that it hurt, so thank you for the warning! It is so nice to hear a story so similar to mine, with such a positive outcome. The results from the blood test and SA were both normal. I had a pelvic ultrasound today, and I have a sonohysterogram on the 13th, and I'm waiting for the results from both of those. Feb 3 we will meet with the doctor regarding a treatment plan. Thanks everyone for your support so far, and for sharing your stories. It is so nice having people to talk to about this.

A quick update, if you look down at my signature you can see my full treatment plan.

Just finished taking progesterone last night and waiting for AF - based on my history, I'm guessing it will come around Monday, then I call my FS and let them know that it is CD1. This is our very first cycle doing treatment and I am feeling really nervous!

Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know how much of a difference there is between Clomid and Gonal-F? We were given both options but decided on Clomid for now because it is the first cycle and it is much less expensive, but I would be interested to know if there is a really big difference in the effectiveness!

Clomid is the sort of "first-line" treatment in IF.  Gonal-F is considered an injectable and typically not used until after several cycles of oral meds fail (Clomid/Femara).  There is very big difference in the 2.  I would recommend checking on the IF or TTTC board.  There are lots of ladies on Clomid or injectables there (you may also want to use to search feature too).

So this is my doctors opinion (of course every doctor has slightly different treatment plans) but he will ONLY do injectables for IVF. He does not like injectables for IUI or TI bc there is a lack of control and much higher risk of higher number multiples and thus a high risk pregnancy. Now, in my case I ovulate on my own, and I react well to Clomid. Obviously it depends on what your individual issues are, but I think you made the right choice starting with Clomid @StephyM89The last thing you'd want is to start a round of medication and then be told to abandon the cycle bc you have way too many mature eggs. GL with Clomid! It's not too bad (although ask me how I feel about it again next week when I start again lol)

Definitely good to know!! I'm definitely happy we are starting with Clomid now, I would be quite disappointed if we had to abandon a cycle, and having a high risk pregnancy is obviously quite scary. Thank you so much for your well wishes, hopefully it goes okay for me too! Fingers crossed!
