Nausea spike at 8 weeks?

I hit 8 weeks yesterday and just like at 6 weeks, everything I had been doing no longer works... Small frequent meals, eating when I first wake up, b6 + unisom... Not working. Threw up several times yesterday morning, violently. I felt pukey all day and still feeling pukey today. I switched to using the diclegis samples the OBGYN gave me last week starting last night, with the full 4 pills a day. Still queasy, but at least I didn't actually vomit this morning. And, back to feeling nauseous the longer I chew food.

Anyone else feel a huge spike in nausea once they hit 8 weeks of being pregnant done?

Re: Nausea spike at 8 weeks?

  • I am 8 weeks today, I hadn't had any nausea until 7w2d, it's been intermittent and I only actually threw up once (on Christmas morning of course) I'm not actually sure if it's morning sickness or my sugar (I'm borderline hypoglycemic and when my sugar gets low I get nauseas and can throw up) I've read pregnancy can change your metabolic rate and it may be harder to keep sugar levels up. I'm wondering if this is it cause i thought (probably more like hope) that if you hadn't had nausea yet at 8 weeks you likely wont

  • I've heard that too. HCG levels usually peak sometime weeks 7-10, from what I've read, which can correspond to a nausea peak.
  • I am mostly nauseated in the evenings and 1st thing I'm the mornings. I have started using a SeaBand  and that has helped me greatly. I got mine at HEB (which is a local grocery store here in Texas). Worth a shot!

  • I've been rocking the PSI bands since 5 weeks... That is on the list of things that stopped working yesterday.
  • I will be 8 weeks tomorrow and my nausea has been getting worse over the last few weeks. I just started diclegis Monday night. It is helping with nausea but I still gag in the morning (and actually threw up this morning) Hopefully a few more days on the medicine will help you too. This nausea thing is really throwing me off too especially when a preggie drop took care of the nausea when I was pregnant with DD. I hope you get some relief from the nausea soon!
  • I'm not sure when it peaks, but after two weeks of throwing up 12-14x a day, I am finally finding relief with a combo of 25 mg b6+12.5mg unisom (1/2 tablet) 3 times a day, phenergran 2x per day, and ginger root tablets (500 mg each, 2x a day when I feel nauseous). My dr has been great with advice, and I am finally able to function. I'm a little drowsy after I take the unisom, but it's much MUCH better than the vomiting and horrible nausea. I am hoping this has peaked and improved over the next few weeks- 12 weeks can't get here soon enough!

Of everything, I am surprised at how well the ginger tablets work. They really do suppress the nausea, which nothing else could.

I hope you find something that works for you!

  • What's the brand of the ginger tablets?
  • I just bought a bottle at Walmart, in the dietary supplements section. They were very inexpensive (less than $4), and are just called "Ginger Root". There are no other ingredients in them.

  • Nausea hit at 6 weeks intermittently and I am in the 8th week and had 2 nights of bad nausea, but it seems to be getting better. Mine generally arrives at night. Sea bands have helped a little, and graham crackers. A cool compress also helped a bit.

  • I'll have to try the ginger pills. Ginger tea worked for week 5, and ginger ale has been the most pleasant thing to drink for the last week or so. Trying to hold off on asking for Zofran or Phenagran unless I start throwing up multiple times a day, but the constant nausea is quite debilitating!
  • YES! I turned 8 weeks yesterday and all hell broke loose! :D I suddenly got every symptom known to man (or pregnant woman, rather), headache, MORE fatigue, dizzy spells, nausea, tender breasts (i didn't think they could get anymore tender!!), cramps, etc. etc. etc. Right now my nausea is gone but I've had a stomach ache since midnight & find no relief no matter what I eat. Crackers, sprite, it all hurts. Dr has me eating soup and gatorade.
    :'( c'mon second trimester!!!!!
  • Hoping this is the worst week!!
  • I did find a good use for all those Christmas candy canes... Peppermint oddly helps, and it hadn't since about week 5!

This may be a little nosy, but if you don't mind me asking, how do you time the medicine throughout the day?  Just took the first ginger pill about half an hour ago.
  • It's really normal to have ups and downs with morning sickness. In average it peaks at 9w, but it definitely varies for everyone. Hang in there mama!! I feel your pain!

I take 25mg b6 w/12.5 mg unisom (half a tablet) at around 7 am, then again at noon, then at 5, then when I go to bed. I take a phenergran at 8, then again at 4. I try to save the ginger pills for if the nausea is really bad, which is normally around lunch and before dinner. I find it I stick to this schedule I stay pretty level, so I try to stay ahead of the sickness. I had a couple days where I threw up right away in the morning and couldn't keep anything down and it was game over for the day.

  • Super helpful!! I'm just going to steal your schedule for b6/unisom and ginger and cross my fingers and pray for awesomeness!

I really hope you find something that works. This is just the most miserable feeling, and this is the first pregnancy where I am taking the bull by the horns instead of laying in bed for weeks.

  • I've been miserable too, and I finally went out and bought ginger ale, which seemed to work almost immediately. I don't know if it was coincidence or not, but either way, I'll take it!
  • Started taking 550 mg ginger pills twice a day Tuesday, and felt a little better that day and better every day this week, slowly but surely. Until today, which has been a little more queasy, but not awful. Maybe there's something to the ginger root pills!
  • My DH found ginger beer at one of the local liquor specialty stores in our area. So far it's helping to sip cold. Ginger ale stopped working for me a wk ago and the pills haven't been as helpful for me.
  • It was like clockwork the day I hit 8 weeks.  I haven't actually puked, but the nausea keeps me from being able to eat much.  The same thing happened at the same time with #1.  As much as I hate it, I've been drinking regular Coke, it seems to keep the nausea at bay enough so that I can eat, ginger ale never seems to do much for me....not the healthiest thing, but whatever works for now so that I don't get a sugar low.

  • This is my second pregnancy.  With my first I had mild nausea between 8-10 weeks and then it went away.  Never puked, not a problem.  This time around I've had nausea since week 6 and (cross my fingers) I think it's starting to finally go away. I'm close to 10 weeks.  It's been terrible this time around puking all over the place and feeling nasty from the moment I wake up till I go to bed and will wake up feeling the same in the middle of the night. Nothing works to fix it.
Like the other ladies said, I would try the medicine. I'll be talking to my Dr. tomorrow at my appointment if I feel like it's going to continue.

  • I hit 7 weeks today and threw up a million times, gotta love it. Nothing seems to help besides being in my bed not moving. I feel absolutely terrible, feeling for everyone with morning, I mean all day sickness.
  • The most frustrating thing has been when what has been helping longer does--it's every other week, I've needed to layer on another remedy to the package, and a couple days into the new package solution, I can leave the couch again.  I feel your pain, @Befree2013!

  • Has anybody had success with sea bands? I just ordered one
  • My nausea started at week 7 and has gotten worse as time has went on. I'll be 10 weeks tomorrow. I also started vomiting multiple times a day
  • I am 9 weeks now and my nausea really hit a peak during weeks 6 and 7. It tapered off during week 8 when I was home from work for a few days for New Years but then today I went back to work and so did my nausea. I don't think the baby likes work.

Coke Zero had been working for my nausea -- a little bubbles, a little caffeine -- but today it was the worst. I feel like that girl who turned into a blueberry in Willy Wonka.

I ordered Sea Bands and got them in last week. They work, but the way they sit on my wrists makes it feel like the area where the plastic bulb sits is bruised, so I'm returning them. If it weren't for that then I'd love them.
  • @ZedPM3 thanks for the heads up!
  • I think I'll have to try ginger root tabs. I am so tired of being tired and nauseated and not wanting to eat anything. :/
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • My biggest issue is the aversion to meat right now. The onlt way I'll eat it is as a burger. Everything else is just grossing me out! And since week 8 (9w 4d now) I have gotten the occasional nausea but nothing too bad. It is enough to lay up in bed and try to sleep it off. But not constantly throwing up etc...
  • I've been taking diclegis, 2 pills, for a little over a week now. As long as I get enough sleep at night, I'm great. But Sundays are hard for me because of church. Once I'm up early, I get sick and when with a 3rd pill, I still stay nauseated and will gag and throw up. The getting up early is the only change. I've had nausea since week 4/5 but it really spiked at 9.
Though the "cracker" stuff is getting on my nerves. It's food, all food people, that makes me sick. So you think I'm an idiot and having tried the cracker trick before?! Ugh... Every. Single. Person.
  • Magnesium really helped me...my prenatal didn't have enough in it!! Plus trying to eat small before I actually get to that super hungry point helps...super hungry=nauseous for me :(
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • With my first pregnancy, I was pretty much  nauseous until about 12 weeks. Zofran was really the only thing that made a difference. I kept crystallized ginger on me for trips to the grocery store (the smell of seafood REALLY got to me).

This time around, I'm pretty nauseous. I'm taking magnesium and B6 in combination with my prenatals (at the advice of my general doctor), and I've noticed a little bit of a difference, but not much.

I also keep saltines in the diaper bag in case it gets really bad, but I haven't actually barfed yet. Just pretty intense food aversions.

  • Insomnia problem, anyone? I was sleeping a lot at the beginning but not for the past 3 days ; (
  • Week 8 I had 3 nights where I couldn't sleep through the night... kept waking up with my hips hurting and queasy and snacked.  I felt so tired but couldn't sleep through the night! Better now though.
  • @dierjas My OB told me I could take unisom.
  • I will be 8 weeks tomorrow and my nausea is gone today.. What the heck?! Can it decrease at 8 weeks instead of spike?
