Has anyone signed up for any parentings/kids type of magazine? Any recommendations? I was looking at Parents and The Bumps magazine but wondering if there newsletter/website is better or just not worth it.
I thought you meant subs as in a sandwich and I felt like a moron for trying to figure out what magazines had to do with sandwiches. Yeah, time to go back to bed I guess

hahaaha. it's alright... not the best grammar on that one... I thought the "Lubing your belly" post was going to be about kinky sex.... imagine my disappointment.

But, for realz..parenting is just one of those things where you're mostly winging it. Magazines try to put everyone into a tiny box and I just don't enjoy them. You might find them helpful, though, so don't let me yuck your yum.
My midwife office has freebie magazines of American Pregnancy (I think that's what it's called). I went to Motherhood Maternity yesterday and they were offering a 2 year subscription to Parents and something else (I think Family Circle?) for $2.99. I didn't sign up because I know I wouldn't read them.
I bought a yearly subscription to parenting a couple years ago. I read about 3-4 magazine the rest are still in the plastic stacked somewhere in this house. I find you learn more by staying active one these boards.
I will admit I got What to Expect: The First Year and read the monthly updates. I liked seeing if my kid was on the right track. Just a few pages a month was enough.
They all suck and after a while you realize they are just trying to sell you a bunch of stuff you don't need while making you feel like you aren't being a good enough parent, or pacifying you by telling you not to be too hard on yourself because you just couldn't get those dishes done today. I second reading some stuff online, at least you can target the subject you want to know about.
With ds I was very careful to avoid the comparison game. For example: My kid started walking at 12 months, why isn't yours walking? We'll MY kid slept through the night at 4 months, why is YOUR baby still in your room waking up every 3 hours? It can get brutal and I wanted to avoid that whole thing. I used our pediatrician appointments to make sure he was on the right track, but honestly if you start comparing your kid to other kids you'll drive yourself crazy. Babies and kids do things when they're ready, not by a timeline. My son walked at 14 months, I personally walked at 7 months...yes I know I'm a freak of nature....but we were both happy and healthy babies. Honestly, especially now that he's older, I browse pinterest for activity ideas etc and occasionally I'll see an article about helping toddlers not hit or whatever it is and I'll read it and take it under advisement. At the end of the day no one can tell you how to parent and no one can tell your baby how to baby.
@afrazer521 I agree 100%. We were never disappointed if she did something late or after someone else's kid, I just like the guidelines to know that something isn't seriously wrong, ya know?
@born2run911 I was lucky with my pediatrician, they were great at checking milestones and at the end of the appointment would give me a little pamphlet on things I should expect between then and the next appointment. I'm not sure if all docs do that, but that's what I always used as my guideline
I got free subscriptions to multiple parenting magazines when DD was born. However, the majority of the articles don't apply for her age or our lifestyle. I enjoyed What To Expect the First Year. Like @born2run911 said, it was much easier to read 1 chapter per month and I found it helpful!
Meh. I never read magazines when I got them while I was younger.. so no point in starting now I suppose. I'll just buy a baby book or use the internet.
