SEVERE Gag Reflex

Anyone else have this issue?? ANYTHING can trigger it. Anything. I can't swallow my prenatals or any pill for the matter. Even ones the size of a tic tac. Even my nasal congestion has me constantly fighting not to gag. It's terrible. Please tell me I'm not the only one and what it is you are doing to ease this affliction!!

Re: SEVERE Gag Reflex

  • Brushing my teeth, amongst other things. I have now vomited when I wasn't even nauseous, because my toothbrush made me gag. I haven't figured out anything to do about it really. Small sips of cold beverages help me keep the gag from full on sick, but that's about it. Try to stay away from my known triggers. Wish I had more to offer.

@RideNRunMomma I have only vomitted from this gag reflex. Never from nausea. It's crazy.
  • Gummy prenatals. If you don't want to do that try taking the pill with yogurt or applesauce since it wil help hide it better than liquids. I drink from a straw.

  • And I feel gross when I can't do a proper brushing because the moment the tooth brush is in my mouth ..... *gag*
  • Yep! The gag is strong over here, too!
  • @megstervt I'm doing the gummy prenatals but my OB wants me to be on Rx strength prenatals. We'll see when I can go back to those. The second anything non chewable hits my mouth, game over.
  • @Nzamorw I feel you! Teeth brushing has been ok for now, but I've had a few close calls.
  • @ChrissyMarie128 I have only vomited from gagging too, not nausea. It's like they're completely separate.

  • All the freaking time glad I am not alone! I can no longer wear scarves or any collared shirts ugh!

  • I had a pretty sensitive gag reflex before being pregnant (couldn't wear turtlenecks and sometimes not even scarves) and brushing my teeth could trigger it. It's definitely gotten worse when pregnant (but getting better at 12 weeks). I can't help with the pills, but I found that if I do gag (never got sick from it) I close my mouth and have to clench my teeth while taking slow, deep breaths through my nose. Not great on the teeth/jaw, but it helps me calm the reflex. I also pop a spearmint lifesaver breath mint and that helps to ease my stomach. Small, slow sips of water helped as well. Hopefully it doesn't last too much longer for you!
  • I puke often after brushing my teeth and after showering...seems so wrong...at least we're not alone!
  • This so sucks but I am so happy hear I am not the only one!! I just never really hear people complain about this symptom being so bad. I can't take it much longer....not that I can do anything about it, but it's kinda of like constantly fighting off some form of torture. Ha!
  • I was at a basketball game last night and someone's breath was BAD. I had to bury my face in my husband's arm several times to keep from gagging - which may have made me puke bc the smell was THAT bad. Hopefully it lets up for us!!
  • ^this! It's not even gag it's just instavomit for me! We pulled into the gas station by my in laws which was next to a sewage treatment plan think terrible fart times 1000. Totally up chucked in the Nasty garbage can next to the pump couldn't make it any farther.

Bummer!  Maybe it's worth a convo with your OB.  I would think some prenatal would be better than none if you can't even get down the pills.  Maybe ask if you can grind it up into a spoonful of something (I know many pills you cant do that, but maybe worth asking).  What about taking it in the middle of the night?  Maybe if you're drowsy the reflex won't be as strong?

Or just do what I do when the symptoms get too much, sit on the floor and cry for a few minutes ;-)

  • I've been so much better with this till today. I think I'm celebrating the 12w milestone by gagging at everything. Got a lemonade on the way to my subway ride to work and I'm fairly confident that's the only thing that kept me from vomitting on public transit.

Yes gagging is an all day thing. It sometimes me throw up. Constant nause. It sucks bla. I have eaten 100 mini peppermint candy canes since Thursday ....... I need more they really help.
  • I used to gag every time I brushed my teeth before I got pregnant and it's even worse now. And taking my prenatal is a battle to get it down every night. And strangely, brushing my hair makes me gag lately. Maybe because it's really long and I tilt my head to the side as I'm brushing? The most annoying lately though is this cold I've had. Every time I cough from the cold I start gagging. No vomiting yet but pretty damn close. Add that to the lovely post nasal drip and the gagging from that I've got going on and I'm having a wonderful time.
  • You are definitely not alone!! I gag when I brush my teeth and try to take my pills, but I've found it's not just a physical issue - it's also a mental one. Everything has been grossing me out lately, causing me to gag. This morning I was gagging because I saw crumbs on my kitchen counter! It's relentless. The only things that seem to help me temporarily is fresh air or laying down in the shower for awhile.
  • I had to switch to a prenatal gummy because I have trouble swallowing pills right now. Lots of things make me gag, which often lead to puking, including brushing my teeth, sneezing, coughing, and even if I'm talking and I'm really nauseas.

Exactly! I take my pill before bed and as soon as I start thinking about getting ready for bed I start to feel nauseated at the thought of taking my pill. It's definitely a mental issue. I even catch myself falling asleep on the couch so I don't have to go get ready for bed. I dread it every night.
  • same! brushing my teeth and the nasal congestion have been nightmares since my BFP!

  • I actually can't sing in the car anymore (or probably anywhere, but I only ever sing along with the radio) because that makes me gag, wtf?

  • Yep. ALL of the above. Gag!!! Gah!!!! I cannot wait until it's over. I really can't take having to fight the urge to gag all day every day. This struggle is REAL!!!! What an awesome gag reflex support thread we have here!! Ha!!
  • Also really struggling with brushing my teeth.. had a gag episode last night after brushing my teeth and had to brush it all over again... oh the torture...

Sometimes I just randomly gag with no forewarning...
  • @Letitiafw the gagging with no forewarning is the worst!!! Happens to me all the time. I so hope this goes away.
  • Yep, not too much nausea but the gag reflex is awful. Switched to the gummies, drink with a straw, and popcicles seem to help after the fact to calm it down.
