Lubing the Belly

So I'm starting to get a little paunchy in the middle and my boobs are enormous, so I figured I should start using some belly butter to help with stretch marks. For those of you that are planning on lubing up your belly for the next 6-7 months, are you doing it every day? Twice a day? Twice a week? When you shower? Anyone with prior experience have an opinion on how frequently is enough?  I don't want to rub myself down more than I need to, but if I can do anything to help my skin stretch gracefully, I'm game.

  • I used cocoa butter with DD and will with this one. It's more for the itching you're gonna experience as the belly grows. If you're gonna get stretch marks, it's going to happen. No lotion is really gonna stop them :)
  • I know stretch marks are inevitable if you're genetically prone, but I was under the impression that a combo of lotion/hydration could make them not as apparent. Or is that all just wishful thinking?

  • My friend recommended Mama Bee Belly butter, so I just bought some of that on amazon. It's unscented, which I like. I'm under no impression that it'll prevent stretch marks, but it should help with dry skin (especially through the winter months) and the itching.

Wishful thinking. The good news is, after a while, those dark red lines start to fade to white and you hardly notice them - or at least that's what happened to mine. The itching part is what's really a pain in the ass.

  • Well balls. My relatives with babies all keep giving me different belly butters, so at least I'll have those when the itching sets in. Kind of a relief, actually, as I think I'm too lazy to consistently lotion myself.

  • I used good ol' Lubriderm post shower for boobs, belly, and expanding hips/thighs. My mom has tons of stretch marks but had six kids. I didn't develop much in the way of stretch marks with DD (maybe some more on hips than I already had). I'm interested to see what happens with this pregnancy!
  • My skin gets very dry in the winter so I am putting on coco butter twice a day. In the morning and at night after my shower. I know I'm going to get stretch marks, but I want to make sure that my skin is moisturized.

  • I use Palmer's Cocoa Butter for Stretch Marks. I've already gone up a cup size and my skin is really dry and itchy from the stretching, but it's enough to just use it after I get out of the shower.

When I told my mom I was pregnant she got me some stuff and one thing was the Burts Bees belly stuff and I've been using it every time I get out of the shower. Even if it doesn't help prevent stretch marks, I like to be very moisturized anyway (history of very dry and irritated skin) and it's like a little ritual now too so..
  • I got whipped by the Stretch Mark Witch. :(  I tried cocoa butter and everything else, but unfortunately, it didn't help me.  It can't hurt to try, though.

  • I used Palmer's cocoa butter every day. It helps!
  • I don't know that I agree that it doesn't help. My first pregnancy I used Palmer's cocoa butter and not even one stretch mark. Second pregnancy, I didn't use anything. Four stretch marks. I was kicking myself even though honestly, they're not a big deal. They've basically faded. This pregnancy, however, I already got my Palmers and Bio Oil because I'm now AMA and so's my skin. If I don't get anymore marks, I'm sure that the lotions will have helped. Anyway they can't hurt, right?

When I read "lubing the baby" I was sure you meant on the way out! D@mn this thread had potential...

ETA- ahhhh BELLY. Well nevermind then, lube away
  • I agree with PPs that it probably has more to do with genetics than anything else; however, I think moisturizing your skin is important for many different reasons and I put lotion on after I shower. Good ol' Vaseline lotion, nothing fancy.

If lube would help on that end of things I'd start stocking up on astroglide right now.

  • Vitamin E oil will help with the itching. Nothing but genetics will prevent stretch marks though. I basically look like I got mauled by a tiger after my first but the others are right, they do fade with time.

  • I used coconut oil every night during my first pregnancy and it helped a lot with the itching and also the extreme dryness I had from the stretching. I didn't get stretch marks but my mom never had any so that's the whole genetics thing. I had my DH apply the oil every night and it actually turned out to be a great bonding activity for him that helped him feel more connected to the baby and it helped me relax before bed. So there's that if you don't want to do it yourself....

@noelietrex this made me think of something my friend told me.. She just had a baby a month ago so was passing on words of wisdom. She said that towards the end she started rubbing a small bit of coconut oil on her lady parts everytime after she went to the bathroom to help keep things moisturized down there in preparation for baby coming out. Dunno if it works or not, but I may try it as the time comes close. Anything to prevent my vag from ripping, there's already enough trauma going on down there.
  • My breasts have been covered in stretch marks since puberty. I have some on my muffin tops as well. I feel like it's inevitable for me. I'm on the cocoa butter/vitamin e train myself to help them fade faster.
  • I'm covered in stretch marks from ds and I honestly don't really care anymore. Something I found for AFTER baby is born though that made a significant difference with them fading is once or twice a week in the shower rub a combination of coffee grounds and oil onto the marked zones, let it sit for as long as you're able, wash it off and slather on the belly butters/cocoa butters etc. I've done it with a combination of oils and olive oil seemed to be the most hydrating for me and I would just save a k cup from my keurig after I used it for the coffee grounds. The coffee works as an exfoliant and the caffeine perks up the skin while the oo hydrates. I honestly noticed a difference after doing this twice. Will definitely go back to doing this after this munchkin is born. Oh and fyi it will leave your bath floor slippery so I always rinsed off quick with soap so the next person getting in wouldn't slip to their doom.
