intro + 5w6d ultrasound question

Hello! I am excited to be here and hoping I get to hang around. I had my third IUI on 11/25, and something that cycle worked!

I am posting because I am a little shaken up and trying to figure out what to do following an ultrasound I had this morning. My RE agreed to have me come in today since we'll be out of town for the holidays (ordinarily he would have had me come in early next week). Overall, I am glad we did it because we found out how many (1) and where (right spot), but I knew we could end up with uneasiness doing an u/s this early. The RE saw a yolk sack but no fetal pole. He said that in over 50% of pregnancies that result in live births, he would see a fetal pole at this point. He suggested trying to get an u/s next week when we'll be visiting family out of town.

We are having trouble figuring out what to do, mainly because the RE we saw is not our usual doc (ours is on vacation)--I know that I would trust my doctor to give us research-backed advice, and this RE may be more alarmist than ours (which I love about our doc--realist but not alarmist). I am worried that if we get another u/s with another doctor, we'll just end up in the same situation--unsure of how to interpret the results we are given. From internet research, it seems like fetal pole is typically visible between 5.5 and 6.5 weeks, so I don't quite understand why I should be worried now. I just don't know.

Any words of wisdom (or hugs)?

Hi and welcome! Happy to see another member here! It definitely is very early for an ultrasound. My RE refuses to do any until 7w, at which point you should also see the heart beating. I know it's not great to be in this uncertain situation especially at this time of year, but I would wait til to reach 7w to be sure you don't end up having to redo another one because of more uncertainty. Hi there and welcome. I had my first U/S at 6 weeks and this is all we saw. My RE was said that was what he wanted to see. It confirmed the pregnancy. My next was at 7 weeks and 1 day and then we saw the embryo with the little flicker of the heartbeat. I think it's pretty early for even the U/S to pick up seeing the fetal pole and everything else. It also depends on how your uterus is too, mine it tilted so it was hard to really pick up even the embryo at 7 weeks.

Thanks, that is good to hear. My hcg is a little low but still has gone up a fair amount (12/11 523; 12/14 2,999; 12/23: 20,542). The RE office is really pushing me to see someone next week for follow up while out of town, still trying to decide on that.

Your's is higher than mine was. My first was 138 and the second was 342. I only had two draws. Your BETA numbers look amazing. It's great if it doubles and your's more than doubled. I know it's easier said than done, but try not to stress over it. I am trying to do that, myself. This is my second and for some reason I am wigging out harder with this one.

I would definitely take him up on the pushing and go see someone, just to put your mind at ease. I couldn't wait to see my LO again. I have my 3rd U/S on the 4th with my OB and I will be 9 weeks, I can't wait!

Thanks @TerraMae80. I posted in TTTC to see if anyone has recommendations for an RE in Portland, OR (where I'll be next week). I just feel like it's still early, I don't want to go to an OB that isn't routinely looking at scans this early and risk getting more ambiguous news. Still trying to decide if it makes sense or not.

Ugh, that does seem alarmist as it's definitely still very early. Here's mine from 6+6 I think. My RE doesn't tend to do them till around 7 weeks for that reason. I hope all goes well and congrats on the BFP!

Thanks for asking @TerraMae80. I have an u/s with my RE tomorrow, so hoping for good news. We decided not to do a scan last week while we were out of town...it just did not seem like it would make us do anything differently and might add unnecessary stress. We also got some other opinions (REs, OB we are planning to use) before we left who reassured us a bit.
