Trying to Get Pregnant

Hello everyone! I'm new to the site and after lurking for a while, I thought I'd finally introduce myself and join the conversation. My name is Thea. I'm 29 years old and my husband is 30 and we've been married for 4 years. I spent the past 11 months losing 93 pounds (299 lbs to 205 lbs, I'm 5'10) in preparation for this and I feel that I'm in a good place to finally TTC.

We tried last month, but alas, AF showed up right on schedule! After having two close friends recently get pregnant on their first try, I was a little disappointed. Also, I have to admit up front that I have a (completely irrational) fear of infertility. Most of it comes from the fact that I'm adopted. 1- I don't know ANYTHING about my medical history, and 2- my adoptive parents struggled greatly with infertility before they adopted me. I know their struggles don't affect me because we're not genetically related, but it's been an ever present part of my "story," as I was made aware of the fact that infertility problems exist waaaay before your average person.

Anyway, I'm here because after seeing some of your posts and signatures, I found comfort in knowing that it doesn't happen in one cycle for everyone. Thanks for reading and I look forward to being a part of this community :)

  • Welcome and good luck!! Congrats on your weight loss, that's a huge accomplishment. Stick around, there's a lot of great support here -- and although it sometimes seems it, pregnancy most certainly does not usually happen on the first try. Enjoy and hope your stay here is short!
  • Welcome! Congrats on the weight loss! I think it's great you took the time to lose weight before TTC. DH and I are currently benched while my shock therapy treatments are being spaced out more quickly. My 2 ECT doctors and my outpatient psychiatrist want to make sure I'll be able to handle going the length of pregnancy without a treatment. So, I hear ya on getting healthy before TTC.

    Best of luck to you!

  • Congrats on the weight loss!! That is an incredible feat!! I lost 75 lbs years ago, and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. It's hard work though!!

I hear you on irrational fear of infertility. We tried for nine months and then had my thyroid treated and another (completely coincidental) medical crisis taken care of.. And now it's all "you should have no problems". We are into our second post treatment cycle and I'm totally freaking out bc those nine months prior are still seared into my mind. It's hard, I know. I'm sorry. I wish I had great advice for you. All I've figured out so far that kinda helps is keeping busy - knitting, training for my marathon, reading. Also, I found the time when my irrational fears pop up most is when I'm laying in bed at night trying to sleep. So I started audiobooks and now I fall asleep to those and set it on a timer. I recently purchased an adult coloring book on the recommendation of other ladies here, supposed to be very therapeutic. I started talking to a therapist about the medical crisis but honestly I talk to her a lot about not spinning out of control with negative thinking in regards to ttc.

Have you talked to your mom about your fears? I don't know if that would be hurtful or helpful... But... Maybe worth a shot? My grandmother openly discussed, since I was very young, her late Mc that she had in between my uncle and mother and how traumatic it was for her. She still talked about her "angel", at 82. My mother openly discussed the year she tried to have me as being the longest year of her life. My cousin was open about her infertility diagnosis and rainbow take home baby (she is ten years older than me).. So I grew up with this talk and always worried that I would have trouble. So I get that aspect. :( sorry.

Wto/tww threads really help. This board is an incredible place, I have found so much peace here. Welcome.

  • Gardeniagirlknits: Thanks for the advice! I actually love the idea of audio books and coloring books. I used to read a lot and I think that would definitely help to keep my mind preoccupied!

I haven't discussed it with my mom. Partially because I don't want her to think she emotionally scarred me lol, and partially because DH and I don't want to tell anyone we're TTC. Because of my stupid fears, I don't want to get anyone's hopes up for grandchildren and then not be able to deliver.

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me!

  • Welcome and may your stay here be pleasantly short. :)

Also congratulations on the weight loss! That's impressive.

I can definitely understand the fears of infertility. It seems to be fairly common for women to have that fear once they start TTC and it doesn't happen the first month or two. There have been a lot of discussion in the TTC community about how that fear is likely, partly, from having been told in sex ed and such our entire lives that unprotected sex=pregnant. So once unprotected sex happens and pregnancy doesn't it feels as if something is wrong. It if gives you any comfort you can remind yourself of the statistics that the average couple without fertility problems takes a year to get pregnant. And on any given cycle, with well-timed intercourse, there is about a 20%.

I think we can all relate to the bittersweet feeling of seeing close friends get pregnant their first cycle while we're still TTC. :/

  • Welcome and congrats on the weight loss! I know how you feel about friends being pregnant while you are still trying. Three of my friends are in their second trimester, and all of DH's friends already have children. I feel like we are left behind, and it makes it all worse. Hopefully your stay here will be short!
  • Congrats on the weight loss and welcome! Sounds like you are a very motivated person.

I would recommend learning about basal body temping (BBT) and charting. It can help you understand how your body works. Download the Fertility Friend app and begin reading the tutorials. It truly can change your outlook on fertility and help your timing be better.

Some me good books to read are Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler and Making Babies by Jill Blakeway and Sami David. GL and make sure to participate in the daily WTO/TWW threads. (Waiting to ovulate/two week wait)

Also, keep in mind that when you give support you will receive it!

  • Welcome and congrats on the weight loss!  I know how difficult that can be.  I've gained some weight recently and my OB just told me she would like me to lose it before I get pregnant.  Now I'm kicking myself for not watching my weight more carefully and facing the decision of whether to postpone TTC when I'm already 33 or go forward and face the risks of getting pregnant while overweight.  Major, major kudos to you for being proactive about the situation.

I completely understand the fears about infertility, and echo others that it's a really common concern.  But the chances that you will actually struggle with it are relatively low.  Read TCOYF and other material to learn about your body, and start temping to learn about your cycle and give yourself the best chance to conceive.  Good luck and I hope your stay here is short!
