Dairy Free--what do you eat?!

Just put on a dairy free diet for LO because he has broken out with terrible eczema.
What in the world can I eat?! Just thinking of lunch options after leaving the doc is driving me insane. Diary is in EVERYTHING!

Re: Dairy Free--what do you eat?!

  • BLT, PB and J, hummus and veggies, chips salsa and guacamole

Lots of stir frys. We've been dairy free for a month and I'm running out of ideas too

  • I don't eat processed foods so it's easy. You're going to have to cook and eat a lot of raw foods. Salads with balsamic vinegarette, pasta with any kind of veggie based sauce. I LOVE almond milk. If you're craving yogurt Whole Foods sells an almond milk based yogurt that's DELICIOUS. The brand is Kite Hill.
  • Lots of good suggestions here. I've been dairy free for about 2 months now with LO. I eat a lot of healthy foods, for example- oatmeal with pb and honey for flavor *it's good, I promise* grilled chicken, I drink a coconut almond milk blend that's really good. I have also been eating a lot more whole grains and veggies. I use avocado or hummus for flavor on sandwiches to replace cheese and will use olive oil or coconut oil to replace butter in recipes. It's honestly helping me to lose baby weight because I pretty much prepare all my own food so I know it's healthy, and I can't get lazy and order pizza or go to a drive through - that's one silver lining!
  • I'm so sorry you have to join the dairy-free team. It is so hard. I can't do soy either, so these are all soy and dairy free. I also cut out egg for a while, but can eat that now (thank goodness!).

I like chicken salad. I make a big batch and eat it for a few days. A lot of pizza places offer pizza with no cheese. I do a lot of apples and peanut butter, salads with nuts, rotisserie chicken, broth-based soups in the crock pot, and tacos.

Also, I look up vegan recipes on Pinterest, and then just substitute the soy-based products for meat. There are also charts that show substitutions for dairy and eggs that are helpful.

Starbucks has a coconut milk substitute that is delicious, and the coconut bliss ice cream is by far the best. They sell it at Kroger and Whole Foods. I also do sorbet sometimes.

  • I have not been able to have soy or dairy since my oldest daughter was diagnosed about 2 years ago. It was horrible at first but has now become the norm. I agree with everything above except I want to add a caution about Starbucks. Have them double check the syrups they use before you order. A lot of them contain milk (or Carmael color which could have milk in it)
We LOVE cream based soups. I just make a rouge with dairy free soy free butter and flour and I used canned coconut milk) it comes out so good! I also use the same base for Alfredo sauce and cream sauce for rice.
I've been experimenting a lot lately and have found that canned coconut milk subs very well for evaporated milk in recipies. I made an amazing pumpkin pie over the Holidays with it!

    Good luck!
  • Here's the link to the cream sauce I use as a base for Alfredo,

This creamy soup is really good! I use almond milk and have made it with a variety of meats (sausage, chicken etc) I've also cooked potatoes and used them in place of the gnocchi when I didn't have any on hand

It's definitely hard. I'm also a vegetarian and have to avoid acidic foods due to LO's reflux (I do eat fish which helps). The good thing is it can mean you eat a lot healthier, but some days when I feel lazy and end up eating nothing but peanut butter sandwiches.

Breakfast tends to be oatmeal or eggs. Lunch is a salad with tuna or tofu or sometimes sandwiches. Agree with using Avacado or hummus to add flavor.

    Some dinners we eat:
lentil soup - if you have a trader joes they sell precooked lentils which makes it super easy
    Stir fries
Salmon burgers with baked beans and veggies
    Veggie fajitas
Omlets (I use fake cheese) & roasted potatoes

    *edit for typo
  • A little off topic but how long were you dairy free before you started seeing a difference in your LO?
  • Thank y'all so much for the suggestions!
One question-- my doc just said to go dairy and nut free, but didn't mention doing soy free right now. Is it a trial/error kinda process? Some of the research I've done says that if LO has a dairy allergy then they probably also have a soy allergy. I just don't want to do all this work to change my diet and then it all be for naught. However I know going soy free is even more difficult than just dairy!
  • We are making this adjustment because LO developed a severe eczema rash on his face and head that requires a short steroid dosage. Doc thinks it could be due to the milk-protein allergy!
  • Our allergist told us that generally if they have issues with milk they have issues with soy and visa versa. Id cut them both out then once LO is symptom free slowly try to add back in the soy.
  • P.S. I just had a cheesecake (it's single serving, don't worry! ;)) by that Kite Hill brand I recommed above. Oh. My. Word.
  • Did it come in single serving? Or did you make it?
  • It's killing me to give up dairy. Before, there were all these organic ready to go snacks and meals I would eat that SAVED me - these breakfast and lunch organic high protein burritos and these organic cliff bars for snacks. Now, going off dairy, I can't eat ANY of them and can't find any substitutions. I have no time to make solid healthy meals without sacrificing something else... So it's been rough. But worth it - if her skin problems turn out to be bc of dairy then I wouldn't bat an eye at giving it up. I just really hope that's the problem so I'm not giving all this stuff up for nothing lol!
  • Have you tried Lara bars? They have a bunch that are dairy free but I don't know if the protein is as high as a cliff bar
  • Omg I've never tried those! I will absolutely look for some dairy free ones now - thank you!!!
