Baby's first airplane trip @ 12 weeks - advice!

Hey mamas,

I'm taking my LO on her first cross-country trip next week and I'm trying to stay calm. We have one layover on the way there and non-stop 4 1/2 hour flight on the way back. I'd love to hear advice from anyone who's been through this already!

Thanks :)

Re: Baby's first airplane trip @ 12 weeks - advice!

  • Just returned from a trip to Atlanta. Live in California so pretty much the exact same distance/flight time. LO turned 3 months while we were on our trip,

Thankfully, we had direct flights both ways and she was awesome!!!

You likely know most of this but here are my tips....
Wear baby at the airport and through security.
    Get a window seat.
Feed baby during takeoff and landing.

    Good luck!!

  • If your bringing formula or pumped milk I'd print out a copy of the tsa/airlines policies. I read several articles over the holidays about traveling mom's being told they couldn't bring milk, or formula being opened to test it.
  • See if you can book a bassinet. I flew overseas and had the option of a bassinet. It was awesome. Baby slept through almost the whole thing freeing me up.

  • You can bring your stroller through security and gate check it, and it doesn't count against your checked bags. Also, we brought our car seat, and even though we hadn't booked LO a seat, we had a free seat next to us and were able to bring the car seat onboard. So it may be worthwhile to bring your car seat to the gate and then gate check it if you have to.

Second wearing baby through security to have your hands free. They will make you go through the metal detector and then wipe your hands for explosive residue. You shouldn't have to go through the backscatter machines.
  • I haven't traveled with baby but I suggest making sure you pack a couple extra outfits for baby and you in the carry on just in case of spit up and blow outs.
  • Once you get to the gate you can ask if the flight is full. If it is not ask for an infant block....that way nobody will be sitting next to you and you will have more room. Most airlines will do this.
  • I haven't flown with a baby but do know you should encourage swallowing to help relieve pressure from their ears. Whether it be feeding them as someone mentioned or a friend of mine had a spray bottle they would squirt juice or water into LO mouth so they would swallow.
