Cloth Diapers

Now that my LO is a little older and I'm now comfortable with his routine, I'd like to switch over to cloth diapers. Any moms out there using cloth? What brand/type do you like/dislike? Any tips/suggestions?

I use Bumgenius Freetime All in One diapers. I love them. They are no more difficult than disposable diapers. I also use cloth wipes (and disposable wipes for big messes) which I also think are just as easy. I do three small loads of diapers per week and I have 16 diapers. I wanted the AIO diapers because honestly I am kind of lazy, and I didn't want the extra hassle of stuffing pocket diapers. However, they are so easy to use that I would have gone with Bumgenius Pocket diapers if I were to do it all over again.

  • I'm using Charlie banana diapers. I think I have 18 and launder every other day. I'm also using cloth wipes (prince lionheart brand). It's so easy! I love not ever having to run out for diapers or searching for deals.

I'm using pocket diapers and love them! Besides the added laundry, like pp said, they are no more difficult than disposables. I bought all of my diapers off Craigslist because they can be expensive so I have about 7 different brands (bum genius, rumparooz, Alva, Coola Baby, Glow Bug, can't think of the others right now). There are not any that I hate, but I especially love the Coola Baby and Glow Bug ones the best, they are the least bulky, but also snap down to the smallest size which is great because my little girl is petite! I also have a few thirsties duo covers, which are used with prefolds, they are too big for her right now so I don't know if I'll like them as much. The pocket diapers/AIOs seem like they are best for the uninitiated because they are so much like disposables, so if you have someone watching your little one quite a bit, or your husband is not on board 100%, that style might be better than v prefolds and covers. Bum genius seem to be the most popular, at least that's the only brand that's sold in stores where I am, they work well but are bulky, I'll think I'll like them better when she's bigger. I've heard there are services that let you rent different kinds to see what you like the best.

Anyway, don't be intimidated or listen to people who tell you cloth diapering is too hard, it's really not that bad, you just have to make a commitment and stick with it
  • We cloth part time because my boy doesn't fit in most of the diapers we bought. (One size pockets) so we are using prefolds and covers. I have a couple of nickis diapers covers that I love and 4 rumparooz. The rumparooz fit a little better in the legs though. My boy has long skinny legs. I like it so far. It's just a little extra laundry.
  • I used cloth diapers on my 2yo daughter and am using them again on my son. That's the best part about cloth if you plan on having more children. We use all pockets. I've used precious, AI2s, AIOs, and pockets and the pockets are by far the easiest and my favorite. We have entirely too many, probably close to 40/45. The prints get addictive. I also use cloth wipes with a spray bottle of water. I use a lot of sunbabies and lawsuits and a few bg.

  • I have a few jungleroo, MG and Kawaii cloth pockets.  I cloth part time, our LO is in a Pavlik harness and the position of his legs seems to cause leaks so we use disposable at night.  I love the cloth.  It helps keep his hips in a good position and are so cute!

  • My LO consistently leaks pee up his side in every disposable I've tried. Have any of you experienced this with cloth? Do you have to change wet diapers more frequently?

I had the same problem with disposables! We tried NB and size 1 in several brands... No luck. We have NOT had the issue with the cloth diapers. We use BumGenius AIO. In fact, they hold so much pee that I could change him less frequently. Also, if we did have a problem with the that, we could add more absorbent inserts. We went away for the weekend and used disposables, and I preferred my cloth diapers so much. He kept leaking through them. He's a pee machine!
  • I'm using a mixture of Bumgenius Freetimes and 4.0s. I have about 25 diapers and typically wash every three days. I was worried but so far it has been pretty straight forward!
  • I use pocket diapers, but honestly, i don't even stuff them. I just lay the liner in the cover and snap it up. The way i see it, if I DID stuff them, whenever she peed a little bit, I'd have to change the whole diaper, but this way, as long as it doesn' soak all the way through, i can reuse the cover, thus needing less covers. Poop tends to get on the covers anyways, so it's usually a complete change. I have noticed that since I started using them, she pees less often in bigger quantities. She rarely ever has a dirty diaper in the morning after sleeping for 9+ hours, but after eating, it's a very full diaper.

  • We use Flip. Do laundry once a day. Change baby every time we feed him, so seven times a day. Have had no diaper rash. He gets pee on his clothes once every few days, but no poo explosions have ever escaped! We need to move on to more absorbent inserts as well, but will stick to the same Flip covers. They are super soft and less bulky than other brands we looked at.
