HCG Levels Indicating Twins?

Hi!  I know the only certain way to determine if you are having twins is through an ultrasound, but I like to daydream.  I had IVF - 2 5 day blastocysts.  My HCG levels were 566 on DPO 15, and 2384 on 19 DPO.  So far ... does this look like twins?:)  I looked at the chart here, advancedfertility.com/earlypre.htm, and it certainly looks like it is a really strong possibility, but wanted some input!

hCG levels in weeks from LMP (gestational age)* :

    3 weeks LMP: 5 – 50 mIU/ml
    4 weeks LMP: 5 – 426 mIU/ml
    5 weeks LMP: 18 – 7,340 mIU/ml
    6 weeks LMP: 1,080 – 56,500 mIU/ml
    7 – 8 weeks LMP: 7, 650 – 229,000 mIU/ml
    9 – 12 weeks LMP: 25,700 – 288,000 mIU/ml
    13 – 16 weeks LMP: 13,300 – 254,000 mIU/ml
    17 – 24 weeks LMP: 4,060 – 165,400 mIU/ml
    25 – 40 weeks LMP: 3,640 – 117,000 mIU/ml

There is a huge range of what are considered normal levels. As you said, you won't know without an ultrasound.

  • My hcg levels were really high. US confirmed just 1 baby today. It's really not a good indicator.

  • It looks like your numbers are doubling every 48 hours which is awesome but doesn't necessarily point to multiples. Keep up with the healthy pregnancy!

My HCG levels were over 40000 at 4.5 weeks, well over the range of normal HCG levels. I had regular u/s starting at 8w (due to a previous molar pregnancy) and there was only ever 1.
    DS1: 8/3/10, DD1: 8/17/13, DD2: 8/13/15
Twins lost to due to partial molar pregnancy: September 2011

  • My hCG was more than doubling every 48 hours and I am positive there is only one in there based on two ultrasounds. Someone on my BMB had normal numbers and was carrying triplets so betas arent really indicative of anything other than a properly progressing pregnancy. The range of "normal" is just too big.
  • Awesome!  Thanks all!
  • I don't think anyone here can tell you if you're having twins or not, and the HCG levels are not a solid indicator.  Just wait til your 12 week scan and be surprised....either way! Good luck!

  • Since you had IVF, your first ultrasound will likely be at around 7 weeks and you will know for sure then. I had totally normal and not at all elevated betas after 5dt of one embryo but found two babies on my week 7 ultrasound! I agree with PP, beta levels do not correlate well with number of fetuses (feti?).

  • Here's a link. You're right, nobody could tell you other than ultrasound at this point. Both are possibilities. Good luck!

  • My hcg levels were pretty low. I had my 6 week ultrasound and it was very clear I had twins, both had great heartbeats .
  • @poeticmutiny   My numbers were 467 for beta 1 and 979 2 days later, and I am expecting twins.  However, I know someone who had VERY similar numbers to me and she is only expecting one.  You never know until the ultrasound.
  • I transferred two 5day blasts earlier this month. At 10dpt my beta was 535. 1082 at 12dpt. My nurse is guessing twins but she said we won't know for sure until my ultrasound...
I've got my fingers crossed for twins!!

Well, did you have your first scan yet? Is it twins or a singleton?
