Babies: 3 - 6 Months

When does LO go down for the night?

DS is 3 months now. He basically goes to sleep for the night at 5pm or 6pm. That's when he has his longest stretch of sleep. I'm trying to follow his cues but that's just so early to go down for the night. He eats twice at night but if I could get him to have that long stretch later, it might only be once. Any thoughts?

Re: When does LO go down for the night?

  • That's the time my lo naturally goes down too. She's 3.5 months. Sometimes I let it be, sometimes I try to push it later. It's so early, but it also seems so silly to either wake her back up or force her to stay up when she's obviously tired. And selfishly, once I'm back at work next week I'll never see her if she goes to sleep that early. I'd really like it to be more like 730. I'd love to hear from others too.

  • Since she was born I have followed more of a routine than a strict schedule. As a newborn she naturally had more awake time in the evening. Now she goes to bed between 9pm-11pm and sleeps through the night until about 9am. I know it sounds late, but it works for us. I'm back at work and enjoy being able to spend the evenings with her. My husband is a stay at home dad, so she has the ability to sleep in later. She's a happy baby and well rested. She takes two daytime naps and a short evening nap. Oh and she's is almost 5 months.

Of course having that long stretch later would be nice and maybe it would cut down the MOTN feedings but at this age you really just have to follow his lead. If he wants to go to bed that early then I'd let him. 2 feedings a night is pretty normal for a 3 month old. It's actually good!

Keeping a baby awake or trying to push them into a schedule that suits our needs usually backfires. And besides, babies change so often that this schedule might change in another month when the 4 month wakeful hits ;)

  • LO usually goes down between 8 and 10, but there have been a couple times her schedule has gotten out of whack and she will go to bed at like 6 or not until midnight. When that happens I just take a couple days and slowly adjust her back to her usual bedtime!
  • Usually asleep by 920/930.
  • I got on here to post the same question. My Bubba is zonking out between 6-7 most days, I wake him at 11 to eat and he wakes again around 3, the problem is he gets up at 530 which sucks. and when he falls asleep as early as 6 I only get 30-45 minutes with him after work, and we can't get his bath in. I struggle to get up at 530, I have older kids who are up as late as 10, so I can't just go to bed earlier... It is rough.

I need to find a way to push him back 1 hour, that would be perfect, but he's so tired he'll sleep with me holding him straight up in the air! And if not he's miserable. There has to be a way to work him back just 1 hour.
  • My LO is almost 12 weeks, and we usually start bedtime routine around 9 PM. He is usually asleep and in his bassinet by 9:30-10:00. If I try to put him to bed earlier he wakes up not long after I lay him down (within 45 mins) and doesn't go back to sleep well until close to his usual bedtime. You just have to do whatever works for you. Every baby is different. :)

That hour might not make a difference as far as his wake up time goes. It seems like that one hour would be perfect but if he's exhausted at 6 then I would just put him down then.
  • 2nights ago, he woke up at 8:30 and wouldn't go back to sleep until almost 10, was still up by 6.
last night he stayed up on his own a little later, we had family over for my son's bday, he stayed up until about 8:15, was in great spirits, he got tired, and went right to sleep when i put him down. he woke at 7 this morning. I'm not dumb enough to believe it will become a trend, but one can hope.

@mrsb30 This is us as well. My LO is 4 months and i love that he goes to sleep around 9pm-11pm and wakes up until 9 am... He's always so happy and rested, as well as his mom, haha. :)
