Worried about furniture and water breaking

Is anyone else worried about ruining brand new furniture in case your water breaks in a "gush" vs a dribble ? I guess I'm getting close enough to DDay where I should probably start putting down towels in the bed and our new couch (light beige color). My dad freaked me out and said he's heard of furniture getting ruined and smelly .. Ewww . Does this actually happen to an extent to ruin furniture ??? Sorry FTM here and we just remodeled our place , I would hate to have to buy new again ..

Re: Worried about furniture and water breaking

  • We put a waterproof mattress protector on our memory foam mattress.. you can't clean those for anything haha. The non nylon ones are pretty affordable. Our couches are leather so I'm not worried about them. I'd say if you just bought this furniture then lay something down where you sit just in case. Even if it's not a ton the last thing you'll want to do after going into labor is scrub your furniture OR have it sit 2 days while you're at the hospital.

  • I'm so glad you mentioned this! I've been secretly worried about my water breaking at work and my desk chair has a cloth seat!

Like will they throw out that chair?! I work in a small doctor's office that doesn't have a janitorial service during the day. Who's gonna clean that mess up if I rush to the hospital?! It stresses me out!
  • I've been wondering this too!!! Also, does it feel like anything or does it just happen??? I have this horrible image of feeling like a boba tea bubble thingy just bursting inside my stomach (I'm sure this is not how it actually happens) and just flooding my clothes.
  • Oh gosh, I never even thought of this!  We have a new couch and a new mattress and I'd be heartbroken if we had to replace either one.  Hmm.
  • @maddisonwallace With my oldest child, my water broke in my driveway as we were leaving for the hospital. It felt like a bulge then pop. My H said he heard a "pop" noise. Everyones water breaking story is different. With my second child they had to break my water at the hospital right before delivery.

This is *literally* my biggest water-breaking fear.
  • For my first I felt and heard a pop, then a thud. Turns out the thud was my son literally dropping into my pelvis, which turned his head into a cork so instead of gushing (I had a ton of extra fluid) it was a dribble. Very strange feeling all around.

For my 1st & 3rd they were broken in the hospital and just felt like I peed myself big time - no pop noise though. With my second I'd just got in from morning shopping and was on my own at home and I felt a bit of pressure then a moment later fluid gushed (and I literally mean gushed) down my legs - no warning! It happened so fast that I thought - did I just wet myself? So I went to the loo and got changed and put a thick pad there but within a minute or two it was soaked through. I ended up going to the hospital wearing one of my daughters nappy's between my legs as there was so much fluid! I had to be induced though as although my waters had definitely gone, labour didn't start naturally over night - so I was induced the next day.

You've just reminded me I start to put down disposable bed mats/changing pads where I sit at this stage in pregnancy normally - I must get them out. I am especially concerned about waters breaking in our expensive car!
  • Brb going to go throw up - my mom totally lied to me about all of this. I feel like a child. This is so disturbing to me.
  • With my son, I had to be induced. The nurses/doctor said there was no way my water would break on its own. So, after I got my epidural, I slept... until I woke up freaking soaked. Being fairly numb and without a catheter because the floor got super busy, I honestly had no idea if I peed myself or if my water broke. It was the latter... such a strange feeling.
  • I have been worried about the same. We just got a new mattress and I really don't want to ruin it. I put down a large garbage bag and then laid a towel over it under the fitted sheet. A friend recommended that so here's hoping. With my first I was induced so water was broken at the hospital. Induction is so much less worry, but no need for it this time.
  • I've been so worried about my water breaking at work, I didn't even think of protecting my furniture at home. Good tips! Apparently a huge gush type of water breaking is uncommon though... But I'm still worried. Maybe I'll start wearing heavy duty pads as I get closer to my due date?
  • With my first, they had to break my water at the hospital because although I was very much in labor it just never broke. I also laid a garbage bag and towel on the bed and will do the same this time.
  • I "borrowed" a few of these from work and planned on putting them down on the couch and in the car on the way to the hospital. We have an awesome waterproof mattress protector.

  • Seriously, chux. Buy a box, keep them ready, NBD. I also have a waterproof mattress pad, always a good idea.
  • At my labor class at the hospital, they said that only in 10% of the cases does labor begin with water breaking. I may regret this since I also have a new couch but I'm going to assume I'll be in the 90% and only take precaution after labor starts.
  • Since we both work during the day, we have doggie pee pads we put one down during the day just in case our pup has to go. I'm going to start sitting/laying on one next week, just to be safe. Our furniture is new as well and it would be awful to have an accident.
  • My water broke with my first, but in the bathroom. We have leather couches and I figure if it breaks in bed it is a good excuse for hubby and I to get a new bed lol
  • Both times mine broke after labor was well established. At home when I got up from the bath with my first, which was nice, then again when I was walking to a delivery room. Got the floor wet but that's not my issue, lol. And with my second, at the hospital right before I started pushing. I was standing up on a pad thing they put down because I couldn't lay down until it had broken. (Don't ask me why, I just wouldn't lie down.) Ruined my socks, but definitely did not care.
  • I've been wondering this too!!! Also, does it feel like anything or does it just happen??? I have this horrible image of feeling like a boba tea bubble thingy just bursting inside my stomach (I'm sure this is not how it actually happens) and just flooding my clothes.

With DS I felt like I peed myself a little (it wasn't very much at all) then 10 minutes later a little bit more came out which made me realize it was my water. They had to break the rest of my water at the hospital. It's different for everyone.

This. I know so many women who have multiple children, and only 2 had their water break. Both were in the bathroom. I was induced with my other 2, so it wasn't an issue. I have a waterproof mattress cover and will put plastic covered with a towel on my driver's seat, but that's it.

Now watch my water break in a gush with this LO. ;)

  • You've got a 90% chance of not starting labor with your water breaking as PP said. And if, like me last time, it does start that way, you might just have a dribble. I just thought I had maybe peed a little bit on the floor from being too pregnant. I got up from bed to pee and a little liquid leaked out. It wouldn't have been enough to ruin any furniture. One paper towell was enough to clean it.

My mom's water broke with both my sister and I in a huge gush. Both times she got up from bed, went to the bathroom, and on the way back to bed gushed on the floor.

    Good luck!
  • Can the water breaking really ruin things? I imagine it being no worse than cleaning up pee? Wouldn't stains or smells come out with carpet cleaner or stain remover?

I still don't think anyone likes a couch cushion or the seat on the car soaked with bodily fluids. Ewwwww.

This isn't meant to sound rude, but you do realize children projectile vomit...and have blow outs, right? And wipe buggers on things...just saying...

I just discussed it with my so and we'd just hire someone to clean the couch or whatever professionally.

There's a big difference between a pile of vomit and poo which isn't terribly likely to be completely liquid and soaking like urine, blood, or amniotic fluid. Once that soaks into cushions I don't care how much you "clean" it, it's not coming out. Any type of surface cleaning is just that, on the surface.
  • With my first I woke up early morning after Hubby left for work to go pee like I had to go so bad well I was thankfully on the potty as a huge gush like a gallon it felt like came out. And with each contraction continued to trickle out as I ran around getting a bag together! I tried a thick maxi pad, which didn't help and I walked through the hospital looking like I seriously wet myself!
  • I don't have a new mattress or couch, but I am a clean freak so I am getting these chux. I just think that it won't be nice coming back with my little one and sleeping on a dirty mattress
  • Ya...here's hoping for a bath tub/toilet or hospital water break.

  • Only like 10% of women actually have their water break on their own. I wouldn't be too concerned.
  • I wasn't concerned with my first because I didn't think I'd be in that 10% BUT I was wrong. I was laying in bed when mine broke. Baby kicked or punched and broke it but I didn't feel anything until I got up to greet husband when he got home from work and then just a trickle, very clearly water breaking and not peeing myself. Changed my clothes and used a pad then went to lay back down while he went to get dog food before going to hospital. While I was laying down it felt like a water balloon making it's way out so I got up quick and was able to get to the bathroom before it completely soaked trough the pad. And it didn't stop for a minute until well into labor. Gushing. Lots and lots of fluid. I had to walk from the hospitals parking garage to the labor and delivery floor with a bath towel hiked up between my legs like a diaper. They only wanted to give me piddle-pads to sit on and insisted that was enough after I had asked for some towels to sit on. Nope, big ol' puddle on the floor someone had to clean up because no one listened to the pregnant lady's plea for towels.
I've heard that usually the baby's head will act like a plug and kept it at more of a trickle. Just didn't happen in my case. So I say better safe then sorry.
  • I put something under the bed sheet and on the recliner I spend my time on. Everything else can more easily be cleaned. And I figure this protects it if I "sniss".
  • Lurking.. had my baby Monday. I was definitely in the 10%. Was laying down in bed and felt like I needed to go to the bathroom. As soon as I stood up I felt it coming and wondered if I should run to the bathroom or hold a blanket under me and before I had time to react, out came a good amount of water. It soaked my undies, PJ pants and dripped down my legs. It was clear fluid.
  • My grandma is a nurse so she always brings me huge diapers and large (dog like) pee pee pads. I'm saving the diapers for my trip to the hospital and I set the pee pads up on the couch and bed. Very helpful!
  • My water broke with my first. It was seven or eight hours later before any contractions started. However, I wasn't confident that it was my water breaking. I was going to the bathroom so it didn't get on any furniture/etc.

My midwife did suggest keeping a garbage bag in my glove box to sit on the last few weeks. Car Seats might be one of the worst/hardest things to clean up.

TMI part: I went to the bathroom and had a looser bowel movement. Not really diarrhea but loose. But I felt like I just kept peeing. It was a weird sensation. I was home alone and straightening up the kitchen and it felt like my underwear were wet. I changed my underwear/pants and put in a pantyliner. I kept soaking through those throughout the evening. It wasn't until the second one that I was completely convinced that my water had in fact broken. I was 37+1 and in denial because there were literally no other signs.
