Dorky?

I asked this on the name board but looking for more opinions than I got. Is alliteration between two sibling names too dorky? We are planning to have 3-4 babes total but this is baby #2 for us. DD is Sophie and one of our favorite names of its a girl is Sienna. Our other top contender is Emma but it's super popular and I'm afraid our Emma (if we had one) would be one in a million -- literally -- once she hits school. Thoughts?? Thanks!

ETA: No, we are not planning to use all "S" names a la Duggar lol

Re: Dorky?

  • I think it's fine. My hubby starts with G and so does his brother and his dad. Lol.

  • Totally fine, I love the name sienna. Go for it!
  • I personally wouldn't do it, but know plenty of people who have and it's been cute. I guess I just don't really get it unless it's to pass the initials down. Btw, I like your daughters name... She and I have something in common ;)

  • DH and I just happen to like a name that starts with S is all. No plan or purpose.

  • My family is all J's. Honestly, I've always loved it and have been so proud to tell people about it. Only since I've been on these boards do I see how negatively it is looked at. I still don't understand why.
  • My sons name starts with C. A lot of the names I like for a potential baby 2 are also with C. I am not the biggest fan of alliteration, but if it is my favorite name, I will go for it.

  • My sisters and I share the same initials! SMN on everything we owned! And my cousin's (3 girls) all start with T. We're not following the trend although I do like sharing initials.
  • As long as the names don't sound similar, I think sibling alliteration is fine. As long as they can tell who you're yelling for.

  • I don't see what the big deal is, I had no idea people hated it so much until these boards! If I met two little sisters named Sophie and Sienna, it likely wouldn't even cross my mind that they had the same initials.
  • I don't think it's a big deal at all! And if you decide not to stick with that theme after this baby that's totally okay too. I start with a T and my brother and sister both start with C. I never felt left out of wished I started with a C I never noticed it too much honestly until I just thought about it lol
  • I wonder this because my fave girl and boy name both start with the same letter so if we had one of each, they'd have alliterative names. Glad to know that most of you don't think it's a big deal!
  • I find alliteration for two kids totally fine. My dad is one of 5 and they are all T and that is to much. Our girls name starts with the same letter as my husband's last name, but I think it's adorable. My husband and his older bother are both D names, but there are 2 other brothers with other names that don't start with D.

  • Thanks, ladies!!

  • I love it. They're both wonderful names! Plus, it sounds nice together: Sophie and Sienna.
  • I grew up as part of an alliteration set, and it was fine.  One of my friends has three children and all of their names start with M.  I agree with as long as the names are not to similar then it is good to go.
  • My close friend said that Sienna is kind of a weird pairing with Sophie so it's made me question. :(

  • I think it's fine. Once someone has 3 or more kids and all their names start with the same letter I might start to think it was a little funny, but not just two. My kids names start with H and E, and I'm considering another E name this time

  • My husband, his 2 siblings and their parents all share the same initials. I don't think it's too bad for siblings, but I always found it a little cheesy for the parents to have the same initials too....and I refuse to name my baby with an S name because of it lol
  • Just like the Kardasgians! Kidding). Doggie an sienna sound perfect. I agree on the Emma being popular thing. It's the only name my husband likes. And he's a smith. I'm sure there will be three other Emma smiths in just her class. I have a list of 60 names and he doesn't like any of them. Sigh.
  • I say do what you like! There's always going to be someone who has a negative opinion. As long as you aren't giving them awful names (e.g., North West) and aren't making them rhyme or something like that, who cares if they have the same letter? My sister and I ended up with the same letter in our first names and it wasn't even on purpose - my parents just happened to like two J names. We never even thought about it.

  • My biggest problem with matchey-matchey names is that when you're angry, are you going to know what name to yell or is it always going to end up being a mash up of the two? Those seem fine. But, Michael and Michaela? No.

DD's name is already one letter away from a super popular name and will likely be mixed in with the 400 Sophias. She gets called Sophia sometimes. Two popular names seems like a lot.

  • I know a family from my kids' school with a D last name, both parents have D first names and all 4 of their kids have D first names. I think it's cute. I never thought anything negative about it. DS has a J name and DH is set on a J name for this LO if it's a boy. My name starts with J too. If it's a girl, I am leaning towards an S name since DD also has a S name.

See, here is one flaw in that statement. Maybe it's just my mom though.... When my mom got mad, usually at me, I was called every name in the house until she got to mine, including my dad. I'm pretty sure I'm not a Mark. Lol. And I'm also fairly certain my name doesn't start with an 'r' :)

I think Sophie and Sienna are awesome names. We were considering Sienna, but put it aside for now, since DH would prefer his kids have different initials than their parents.

  • Hmmmm, yeah, we won't be a family with all the same initial. DH and I are J and B and DD is S, obviously.

  • I don't think it's dorky at all! I have a friend with 3 LOs, all As. I also have a friend who is named after her mother and her bro is named after their father (a tad bit dorky). I'm a M, my DH is a M and our son is going to be a M. We also had a girl name we loved, which was a M as well. Not really planned, just what we like.
I have a friend with a Sophie and an Olivia.I love Emma too, bit Sienna is very pretty. Go with your heart

I get called Sophia all the time and it drives me crazy! I always correct them which makes me sound like a b, but I don't care. My name is Sophie, not Sophia.
One time I was at Starbucks waiting on my coffee. Apparent they had been calling what sounded like "suff-ea" for 10 mins and I naturally didn't respond because it's not even close to how my name sounds and my brain didn't pick up on it. I went to ask about my drink under the name Sophie, and they said "well we have been calling suff-ea for a long time". Hmmmm.

  • My parents, My siblings, and I all have the same initials.  Everyone always thought it was cool.  We never had a problem with names getting mixed up because I names were different.

My nieces and nephew all have J names.  I guess my sister wanted to continue part of the tradition.

Starbucks is notorious for being special with names. But yeah... Common sense is not always so common. Most ppl we associate with know DD so they call her the right name. It was mostly when she was first born. DH even told a couple ppl before she was born that we were going to name her Sophia and I had to correct him. :s
