Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Will I need to see a doctor? (Intro, I guess)

I'm currently in the process of miscarrying at 5 weeks. I woke up yesterday to heavy bleeding. I've been bleeding since but no big clots; just smaller sized ones. Mild cramping, nothing too painful though.

Anyway, will at anytime during this, will I need to see a doctor? My last OB moved away last year and I never found a new one.

  • So sorry for your loss.  Do you have a PCP?  If you do, I would call them.  There's probably a good chance that this is just a normal miscarriage that will progress naturally, but when I had bleeding at 5 weeks it turned out to be the first sign of an ectopic.  There's also always the (small) possibility that not all the tissue will pass.  So it's probably worth talking to a doctor to find out if they want to draw HCG levels and make sure they drop back to zero.

  • I would call your PCP so they can monitor your HCG levels down.

  • I would go in! I thought I miscarried naturally, after an ultra sound they found 1/2 the sac still there, we waited another week still hadn't budged. I had to do a D&C, they said had I left it there would of been future issues trying to conceive.
  • So sorry for you loss!

Echoing PP/s response to see a doctor, even if not you OB. I hate to mention this because it's very unlikely, but in case you end up having multiple miscarriages and need to see an RE about RPL, you will want the medical documentation of the miscarriages in case insurance tried to fight you on the RPL diagnosis.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. I just had my confirmation appointment today. They did an ultrasound to confirm that no tissue was left. It's possible that you may not need it - for me, they were pretty confident based on my symptoms/experience that it was complete. They aren't recommending HCG level monitoring because things look good. However l, they do still want to follow up again in a month.

This is a long winded way to say that I think it would be a good thing to go. For me, I wanted the peace of mind that there would be no complications for me, and I wanted the opportunity to meet with my doctor. I also hadn't established myself as a patient yet due to moving, but my office still got me in right away. It's worth checking in with a health care provider, even if it's your first appointment. Additionally, that way they'll know your health history right away if you do get another BFP later and need additional monitoring.
  • Thanks everyone! I'll call tomorrow and see what they say. My PCP was also my OB. So she did everything for me! I'm lost without her! I'll call the office I was planning on making my first appointment with. I'm just dreading that this might become a long drawn out process. I just want it done. :pensive:
