Experienced mamas...

Are rock n plays superior to other baby chairs? I have a feeling everyone will say yes just not sure how it's better. We have several bouncy chairs already from DD and wondering if it makes sense to buy a PNP. Thx.

Re: Experienced mamas...

  • We never bought a RNP and I never looked into one. Here's a recent thread that might help though:

  • I had a swing and fisher price vibrating convertable infant seat/toddler rocker for DS and loved both of them. No rock and play. I'd consider getting one provided I can buy it used for around $20. Mainly because I like having baby vessels in every room possible so I don't have to move things!

It's good because it's snuggly, vibrates, rocks, is at an angle and I believe is approved for extended sleep periods.

  • I used a rnp with both my boys. It was nice at first. If you do use one I would suggest taking the fabric off and putting a blanket under it to give some cushion. It's really pretty hard. My first slept in it until he was maybe 3-4 months beside our bed. His head got a little flat from not really moving much. I stopped using it then and he was fine. I'm not using one this time around except for maybe a spot to put the baby while I'm cooking or something. They get used to sleeping on an incline and it's hard to transition to a flat surface in my experience. I should mention that the rnp I used was the first one they came out with about 5 yrs ago. I know they've changed a lot since then. Maybe there's more padding now.

  • We used one and will use it again. I think DS slept in it for about 3 months and I transitioned him to his room and then to his crib. I had very little problems with the move to his crib at 3 months. We used the Merlin Magic Sleep Suit which was basically incredible.
  • I used one for my last 2 kids. We used it for sleeping purposes since both of my kids tended to get sick at night and being on a incline helped them greatly. we will be reusing the one from my daughter for this little one. It's nice to have but if you have other things for the baby its not a necessity.
  • Not to stir things up or to concern any moms but I've seen a few articles similar to this one circulating around the past few years. I'm sure that I'm just an overly concerned mom and I probably worry too much about things that I shouldn't but I figured I would share this. https://kckidsdoc.com/dear-fisher-price.html
  • I went back and forth when I was pregnant with my first but ended up just using a swing and a bouncer.  He slept in a pack-n-play bassinet.

Huh! I'd never heard anything like that before! DD would only sleep in her bouncy chair for months... About six. She HATED her crib. Hope we didn't put her at risk although she turned out fine. Thanks for sharing!

  • I am not a fan of these, but I personally am not comfortable putting my baby to sleep in anything that's not flat, especially with extra fabric. DD slept on the "bassinet" part of the PnP, which really only changed the height of the floor on the PnP. I am not judging other moms who use these, I just don't feel comfortable using them.

  • We used out RnP for the first few months because it fit easily beside the bed.  For us, it was not a necessity.  However, a know moms who bought RnPs when their LO's had terrible reflux.  Sleeping at an incline helped fight the reflux.

Unlike, swings and chairs, RnPs are approved for sleeping devices. As one PP mentioned, there is a transition period from the RnP to the crib.  RnPs are so small and inclined.  Cribs are flat and feel massive to an infant.  There are hacks, to help transition smoothly.

We never used a rnp with our first and for our second we only bought it because he suffered from GERD and it is a God send for helping them sleep elevated. Otherwise,I wouldnt bother buying one.
  • @PressLove do you have the website for the approval? Was it AAP? I had read it wasn't approved. I'm not keen on getting one, but would be interested in seeing the approval in case our LO has reflux issues. Otherwise I'll just incline the bassinet/crib as it is safer.
  • We used it for a few months with DS2, and it was fantastic when he got a cold. In my experience, when I elevate the crib baby just ends up at the bottom. So the incline does nothing for keeping their head elevated. I'll be using it again for this baby. We had no transfer issues last time, but every baby is so different.

  • I loved our rock and play. We did not have the one with vibration. Dd would not sleep in anything but that. At around 5 months we switched to her crib. It's easy to take anywhere. Then we also had a little chair for her to use. So the rnp was for sleep only.
  • My kid too had pretty bad reflux and incline in RnP gave us peace of mind the first couple months. Flat sleeping works only for some babies and inclining the crib just made the baby roll to the bottom unless we put a rolled towel under his butt (upon doctor's recommendation). Also the kid in my case must have not felt restricted in the RnP- he had no problems startling himself awake or moving around his head.

HBamama2B- I stand corrected.  RnPs are not recomended for sleep by the AAP.  However, due to reflux issues, I have known a number of moms who have used them as sleepers.  At that point, the reflux was a much bigger problem than the risk of SIDS.

I agree that inclining the crib mattress (with towels, etc.) is an excellent alternative.  While I have never done this in a bassinet, DD's mattress is still inclined due to the congestion she's had over the past week.

Edited because I'm having a time adding the picture of the incline.

  • I used one with my first and probably will with this one.  I had my son almost 4 weeks early, so he was small.  It kept him snuggled, which he loved and he slept best in it.  I also used a pack in play bassinet portion at night.  The PNP is not as portable, so the RNP was nice to move room to room.  Good luck, it really depends on the kid as to what they will like.
