Turns out its piriformis syndrome! Seeing the chiro now 3 times a week! Still have the pains hoping for relief soon!

Hello everyone.  I am new here to these forums. My husband and I have been TTC and just found out we were pregnant on November 19th...4 days after our 1 year wedding anniversary! Best Anniversary Gift EVER! I miscarried 3 years ago at 11 weeks but baby had stopped growing at 7 weeks. Needless to say I am a little nervous this pregnancy. I had my first appt yesterday after calling the doctors office a million times to get me in...ok maybe not a million but it was a lot. My first prenatal appt was scheduled for tomorrow but due to spotting I just couldn't wait. As I have already been down this path before. Thankfully everything is okay and we got to see our sweet little baby's heart flicker on the screen. I am 6 weeks pregnant today! My next appt is in 2 weeks and it can't come soon enough!

Now for my question! Never in my life have I dealt with the pains I am currently dealing with. Literally a pain in my butt! It starts in my lower back and shoots through my butt and down my leg. Last month I went to the doctors to find out why I was having certain pains (not in my back) they were more in my pelvic area. Making it hard to try and conceive...can't have sex with you're in pain.  I was told it was mittleschmerz (ovulation pains). I went a few years ago too and got the same diagnosis. It would come and go.... BUT THIS? This is different this is in my back causing me to feel almost paralyzed when I stand up.

Of course when I went to the doctors yesterday I was more concerned about hearing a heartbeat and making sure that every thing was ok...then asking about my pains. I am going to call the nurse and see if this is pregnancy related. But I just wanted to get feed back and tips if anyone has experienced these pains early on...I know it can happen later on...How did you deal with it? How long did it last? I have been doing hot and cold compresses seems to help for a few minutes but that's about it. Its the worst when I have been sitting and then stand up :(

Thanks in advance and sorry for the rant! :)

Re: 6 weeks pregnant with Sciatica Pains (Edit)

  • Is it really your back or would you say it's in your pelvic bones?  There's a disorder that has significant pelvic pain throughout pregnancy.

Its in my lower back left side and left buttocks. That shoots down my leg. Its not in my pelvic area. If that makes sense?

  • I'm really familiar with sciatic/back pain. I had a back surgery for a herniated disk with nerve compression and what use to help me before surgery was stretching. You can lay on your belly and lift your upper body by pressing on your hands. You can do it 12-15 times and holding your body up for 5-6 seconds everytime.
It's basically the cobra position in yoga.

Don't hesitate to see a physiotherapist this could really help!

  • I have had pain similar to this on and off since i fractured my tailbone about 5 years ago, and it ramped up after i got pregnant. I cant say that we are experiencing the same thing but mine was indeed sciatic pain. i started seeing a chiropractor once a week (now just on fortnighly visit) and its been totally fine for last 6-8 weeks. Maybe go see one? I found one that specializes in pregnant women but even he said any experienced chiro can adjust a pregnant woman safely.
  • I don't ever remember fracturing or hurting anything that's why these pains are so weird to me. I am wondering if its my work chair but I've had the same work chair for almost a year. I've been having them for 4 weeks or so now. I don't get it. I called my doctors office and spoke to a nurse and she said I am too early to have pains already. Which I figured... but its strange I have these pains accompanied with finding out I was pregnant. I am thinking I will have to go and see a chiropractor. Just so worried they will mess me up even more.

  • I'm currently 25 weeks, and suffer with sciatic nerve pain just as you have described and have been since about 13 weeks. In the past 4 weeks however they have gotten so bad that they wake me up at night. I have been to the ER with them at one point because I was in tears with such bad pain. The dr basically told me that besides taking tylenol for the pain that there wasn't much they could do since they can't make the baby/womb get off the sciatic nerve. The best thing to do is when you stand up and feel that paralyzing pain, to sit back down and wait a few seconds and try again. Also sleeping with a pillow between your legs really makes a difference, for me at least. I'm so sorry you have to suffer with these pains, and unfortunatley they only get worse. However my Dr did say that as long as you're not in severe pain and there is no bleeding not much can be wrong with baby, and that it's probably a mommy pain not a baby pain.
Hope everything gets better for you.
  • @kneill15 I scheduled an appt with the chiropractor hoping they can help. Its on Tuesday. Not sure what they can do since they can't take x-rays. I have never been to one since this just started about 4 weeks ago. I have to think its something to do with my pregnancy buy gyno says no? Baby is too small. Which I get, maybe its just a coincidence? The pain is just getting worse as days pass. Its mostly in my buttocks and shoots down to my knee :( Brought a pillow to work to sit on and a cold compress. Neither are working. I am most comfortable when I am sleeping. Sitting is the death of me right now..Well sitting and then standing up.

I can't even imagine how you feel since you are farther along you poor thing :( I hope it gets better for you as well!

  • I second the chiro. I have Sacro iliac pain (that pain in your butt) and a couple of years ago also had sciatica.... chiro and PT are really helping me out. Good luck!
  • Thanks everyone! I have my first every Chiro Appt today! I am looking SO forward to it! :)
