Making your own baby food

Since we're so close to feeding real foods I'm ready to purchase whatever I need to make my own food. Now I am not comfortable in the kitchen but this is important to me so I need all the help I can get. I was checking out the Nuby Garden Fresh Mighty Blender and it has really good reviews and seems to have everything you'd need. What have you ladies done in the past?

Re: Making your own baby food

  • We have the baby brezza... Won't be busting it out for another couple of months but it looks rad.
  • Loading the player...
  • I got a baby bullet for Christmas! It came with storage stuff and a recipe book and a nutritional guide. I'm so excited about it and might be trying it out for my best friend's 5 month old before I do food for LO (:
  • My friend used the immersion blender and a mini food processor. We have a steamer as well. I'm not sure if I'll be making my own since we barely can make our own dinners... I have a 3 hr commute round trip plus the time to pick up drop off lo so I get home around 630 have to pump feed lo play w him then it's bed by 8 830 for him plus bath time then I'm practically in bed right after to get up at 430. It sucks living this far from work
  • We used the beaba baby cook in the past and loved it!

I have a baby bullet. It works really well and I like the book it came with. But I find the blender to be small. I understand it's for baby food but I liked to make big batches to freeze, so I found I had to do multiple batches of the same thing because it didn't hold much.

ETA: I used it for DS, I haven't made any for this LO yet.
  • @buckleyk good tip! Thank you!
  • @buckleyk that's a good tip about freezing. How do you store the frozen food? In the ice cube tray?
  • I just put all the cubes in a zip lock bag or Tupperware container. I know the sell special containers for freezing baby food but it seemed like such a waste to buy something sperate when I already had ice cube trays around.
  • I have a Nutrabullet and plan on using that. There are some recipe books I found on Amazon that I want to order too.

The only baby piece of equipment I want is the one that can make those squeeze packs. That seems legit. I want to check it out at Buy Buy Baby this week. We got a heigh chair for Christmas so we are almost set!
  • I got the sage spoonfuls and it came with an immersion blender that can also attach to a mini food processor and came with a guide for how to introduce foods and when and ideas for combining veggies and fruits. I like that it came with the immersion blender as I can use it for other things not just for baby food and then I'm stuck with a useless kitchen item. I have already used it for other things around the kitchen.
  • I feel the same way about the baby bullet. It's cool and the book was helpful but once we really got going we just used our regular blender because it was bigger. I also used ice cube trays (about an ounce per cube) and once frozen stored them in gallon zip lock bags. It worked awesome.

  • I got the Beaba Babycook pro. Looking forward to using it!
  • I just got an immersion blender and the kiinde starter pack for pouches. We'll see how it goes! I'm hoping to just blend whatever I cook for myself and then make big batches of more typical baby food. I'm splitting a CSA share with my sister over the spring/summer, so hoping that whatever I don't eat from the box I can blend for baby.
  • Thanks ladies for all the great tips!!! <3

I just got a new food processor for Christmas (mine broke last year) so I can't wait to use it for baby food.....and next year's Christmas Oreo Balls

Edit:Oh, and I also plan on using silicone ice trays to help freeze.
  • My only question for using ice cube trays vs buying ones specifically for baby food is the portion size. Ice cube trays are smaller so won't the portions be less?
  • With my son I tried all the fancy baby food blenders but I found they all broke within weeks! I finally just settled on a stick blender! It's still going strong today!
I also got little food tubs that id store his food in. I found it easier to just grab the tub out of the freezer than having to transfer a few ice cubes into a bag and so on.
Making your own baby food is actually so much fun!!
  • I think I'm going to try BLW this time around. A bit nervous. I made all DD1 food and it was fine just time consuming.

  • The ice cubes are about an ounce so if I was putting meals together for daycare or something I would stick a few cubes (depending on how old she was) into a container for each meal. You can also mix the cubes which is nice (fruits and veggies or such).

  • @junebaby20 BLW is definitely a time saver. We did it with DD1, and it was no extra prep, just a bit more planning. We made sure at least one thing was suitable for her, and didn't add salt or honey until her portion was taken out. Bonus-you can eat your own hot food while baby plays with theirs :) we're doing it again.
