Milk production already?

This is my second pregnancy. I know I started producing milk early with my first, so my doc told me to start pumping. Might as well same what I was leaking. Anyways that was around 25 to 27 weeks with my first. I'm 16.4 today and already started leaking. Anyone else?

Re: Milk production already?

  • I have no experience with this this early.. But I thought pumping or stimulating the nipples in any way could cause preterm labor. I could be wrong?? I leaked starting about 38 weeks, I just wore pads to absorb it. There are some pads you can buy that collect the milk if you're leaking a lot.

  • My doc said that unless you're ready for labor no matter what you do will not actually cause labor. I so not know if this is true, but pumping never helped start my labor with my dd. I still went 42 weeks. It was nice I had about two months worth of colostrum stored by the time she was born

Wouldn't that just make you create more milk? I mean if that's what you want then go for it. Otherwise I'd just use nursing pads.

  • I don't mind pumping. I'm in the military so when I go back to work it's nice to have a really got supply. With dd I had a really had time finding time to pump while I was on leave with her then going back into swing of things at work I could hardly pump. So at least I had some to hold me over.
  • My first reaction to your post was jealousy!!
I had so much trouble keeping my supply up and never had enough frozen. Plus I'm a planner, so being able to start in advance would be cool!

I've never known anyone who started producing and/or pumping before birth. If your doctor says go for it, and it worked before then go for it.
You mentioned colostrum. How long should a newborn get colostrum? Two months sounds like a lot, but this is my uneducated opinion.
  • I never leaked when I was pregnant with DS but my boobs are already rock hard and every time I'm in the shower I expect them to start oozing. My OB said to expect my colostrum to come in "a lot earlier" this time. I'm just hoping it's some surge in hormones and will go away. I'm not going to worry about saving any of it if it does come through because I doubt I'd give it to LO anyways.

  • I am not leaking, but since about 8 weeks I could squeeze a nipple and colostrum or something was there. I wouldn't pump unless you absolutely need to - to be comfortable, or if a nursing pad doesn't do the trick.

I started leaking about 22 weeks with DS as a first time mom I was a little shocked. I didn't even know it was possible. My doctor said no pumping due to causing preterm labor plus I would never want to start my relationship back with my pump earlier than I have too. Anyway good for you for stocking up.

  • I haven't started pumping yet. I'm thinking about waiting until mid 20 or early in week 30. Just interesting how early it is this time compared to last.
  • I started leaking with my first and with this one right around 14 weeks. Just a few drops most days, mostly on the left (she's the overachiever). I have no plans to pump anytime soon.
