Now I have a cold

I'm going to call my OB on Monday to see what is safe to take but I'm gathering the reaponse is going to be nothing? I googled and pretty much found that I should just drink tea with lemon and honey. Anyone know of anything that can be taken?

I am congested with sore throat. Sinuses are hurting to the touch. A lot of sneezing. Liquids hurt being swallowed except for cold milk. That's an odd one. And I only know that because I ate cereal and it felt good to eat. But I know eating dairy is not a good idea when dealing with congestion.

Any ideas?

  • Benadryl. Anything without "D" ... Alegra, Tylenol, Claratin... There's a lot you can take, but nothing that helps if you're congested.

My doc said that I could take Afrin, which is a nasal spray, which is super addictive (like it literally says on the bottle only take it 2-3 days in a row because your sinuses get addicted to it) but is a GODSEND in the middle of really bad congestion. I usually save that for the worst few days of my cold, and it's amazing. Especially at night because I canNOT fall asleep breathing through my mouth.

I was also told that there is a certain type of Sudafed that you can take... I think it's just the normal Sudafed as long as it's not PE? Don't quote me on that but ask your doc. Mine said it was fine, again, for a few days at a time.

Granted, this was about ten weeks ago, so the game changes depending on how far along you are, I know.
  • I have a really bad cold too. Called the advice nurse and she prescribed some cough syrup. She said nothing with a decongestant :(
  • I recently got the cold/flu at 35 weeks pregnant with sore throat, congested nose and my dr still prescribed some antibiotics which are safe durin pregnancy.

He gave me antihistamine nasal spray to use as a last resort but i found those saline nasal douches to be amazing at clearing out the congestion.

Was lucky to suck on honey/lemon lozenges anytime i had chronic chesty coughing. It cleared in a week but the coughing stopped maybe a week later...

I am now 37w2d pregnant and happy its finally gone as not in the mood to pop out a baby when i'm sick with the flu
  • I caught the flu almost 2 weeks ago. It's just a lingering cold now. I just drank a ton (12 cups) of water each day and took lots of vitamin C. It was awful but my midwife just told me to take Tylenol until my fever was gone and drink lots of water. I am finally starting to feel better but it took a long time. I am 39 weeks now and hoping to be completely well before baby.
Hope your feeling better soon and get the relief you need.

  • I just woke up with a sore throat and stuffy. Damn you little snotty kids over Christmas. Im hoping if I drink enough water I can nip it in the bud but doubting it.
  • My doctor told me I could take plain mucinex and plain sudafed.
  • Thankfully no fever. I was throwing up and in the bathroom for two days. That finally stopped then the next day this hit. Started with just a little congestion. Now it's a lot of congestion, sinus pressure, cough, and sore throat. Sent my husband to the store (no pharmacy here within 20 minutes that's open today) and he came back and said they didn't have cough drops, Afrin, Vicks vapor rub, or plain sudafed. May have to wait until the pharmacy opens tomorrow. He did get honey and lemon though. Tea did help my throat but I can only drink so much of that. Going to get some Gatorade because I'm afraid I'm getting dehydrated again. :( I was over Christmas from the throwing up and bathroom trips.
  • I had these herbal teas for sinus and sore throat and Doctor said it was ok to take (Celestial Seasonings Sleepytime sore throat and Sleepytime sinus). Also if you can find a nasal douche (that's really what it's called) get one. Ours looks like a water bottle with a little acornian looking pump thing you squeeze on the side. It GENTLY forces a saline solution through your sinuses to clear out the mucus and relieve a bit of the congestion. It's seriously awesome. I hope you feel better soon.
  • Same stuffy nose, sore throat and cough for the 3rd time this fall/winter! Ugh I usually never get sick! Just taking regular Claritin and drinking as much water as I can handle! 37 weeks and hoping this goes away in the next few days! Hope all you ladies feel better soon as well!
  • My daughter and I also are congested, coughing, and sneezing. A packet that my doctor gave me says I can take Mucinex and Robitussin. I've taken the Mucinex the past two days, but I'm still really stuffy. My poor daughter is in the phase where she is still too little to really take anything, even though she is 3 (doesn't weigh more than 30 lbs yet

  • I'm 37 weeks and have had a sinus infection for over a week. The dr told me to take sudafed but it is a category c drug so I am apprehensive. For sore throat I've just done warm water with lemon and honey and for the congestion a neti pot is amazing. There really isn't too much you can take unfortunately.
  • Did any of your symptoms start with headaches? I've been throwing up but it's not abnormal for me during late pregnancy. My husband is sick with a sore throat and I just talked to my mom and she has a sore throat as well. We were just over with her for Christmas. I hope I'm just paranoid but my head has been hurting.
For DH I've been giving him apple cider vinegar mixed with water, lemon Celestial teas with honey and cayenne pepper (as someone mentioned above), Tylenol and DayQuil, and plenty of water. He has also been taking vitamin C.
I will be taking some vitamin C so maybe I can dodge this flu.
    Good luck ladies xo.
  • I only started getting a headache today and it's from pressure. Thankfully! Had a bunch of watermelon today hoping to help with the hydration. It's not to shabby on the vitamin c. We don't keep vitamin c supplements in the house so I don't have any here. I have clementines but they give me heart burn. lol pregnancy huh!
  • I was taking mucinex at first to help get the mucus out, then it developed into a cough situation so I bumped it up to robitussin DM which is robitussin and mucinex. It was still lingering and getting worse so I got an RX for augmentin and was much better within 2 days. You can take things, you will not ruin the baby but you will feel much better and be less stressed. Most cat C drugs are fine, especially short term, they're just not extensively tested.
