Crib Mattress

So DH and I have bought pretty much everything we need for the nursery except for the crib mattress. We have a bassinet for the first few weeks so it's not urgent to get one immediately. My question is how in the hell do we know which one to get?? They range in price from $50-$700!! Money isn't really an issue but it seems silly to spend hundreds of dollars on something that we can get for less than $100, I just don't know how to tell which is worth it??? Any advice is much appreciated!!

Re: Crib Mattress

  • We got one with the two sides. Beyond that, I didn't see much difference. Mine was about $125

  • I think it depends what matters to you. You can look at websites like Lucie's List or Cricket Circle for recommendations, but if something is important to you personally (like it being made from organic materials as one example) that helps narrow the focus. I'm a FTM but I believe from a safety perspective the one non-negotiable is that the mattress be extremely firm. I believe on the websites I mentioned they have product recommendations at every price point, so I'm sure you can find a safe, great mattress for a reasonable price.
  • I got a Sealy one that I'm very happy with quality wise and it was around 100-125. I felt that was reasonable and I trust the brand.
  • The most important factor is that it's firm. We got a seals one like PP for about $120 I believe. Using it with our next baby as well.
  • We wanted a dual sided one that was waterproof and made in the US so that's what we picked out!
  • We also got the dual sided Sealy one. I believe it was about $125 and should last for years!
  • Target has the dual sided one for 120, our toddler still uses his.

  • We have a Sealy dual side one from Babies R Us that was $179 I believe.

  • Both of our kids have the sealy waterproof one.
  • Curious if anyone has purchased, or considered the secure beginnings mattress?

Is it worth it? It seems great for newborns and younger infants, but I wonder if it will stand the test of an older baby standing or jumping on it?

  • We splurged and got the organic naturepedic. I've hardly spent any money on this baby and it's something that we'll use every day for years (DS is 4 and still uses his in his toddler bed). It was about $260.
  • Whatever you get make sure u have a comfy waterproof mattress cover for easy night cleaning
  • Got a Sealy waterproof one at BRU for around $130. I figured he'd be using it even when a toddler so it was best to get a durable one.
  • Anyone have experience with the Graco foam mattress in a box? It was not the one I registered for, so I'm leery. A close set of friends bought it for us so I don't really want to return it unless it won't be good for baby. I've tried doing Internet research with out much luck...
  • I paid 35 for mine but I got it on sale. I would look for some sales

We use Naturepedic for our twins and got one for the new baby's co-sleeper bassinet. Organic and chemical flame retardant free was important to us so they were well worth the cost. We'll either stick with Naturepedic or get organic natural latex (what we have) when the girls move to big beds and the baby takes one of their cribs.

I really wanted this one, but it isn't affordable for me at this time. The reviews seem awesome! I went with a Sealy, I believe. Pretty sure it was under $100.

Lurking from A16 -- Did you end up using this Graco mattress? It got great reviews on Bru and Target.com but some reviews on  Amazon said it didn't fully 'plump up'. Just wondering if you ended up liking it.
