Did anyone else stop cooking??

I know I have been really sick and just haven't felt like doing anything in so long but I'm starting to feel guilty. My hg caused me to leave my job and my husband works 65 hrs a week.... he hasn't gotten a home cooked meal in 2 months. It's either take out or frozen food everyday! I feel so bad for him. And it makes me feel like a bad wife honestly.. what have all my other hg sistas been doing in this situation??

Re: Did anyone else stop cooking??

  • I don't have hg but I haven't cooked in months either... DH has picked up all the cooking slack... The smells and food aversions were too much for me early in my first tri- then he just stuck with it... I do feel bad sometimes but honestly we split things up pretty evenly... He food shops & cooks, I clean, handle all our finances, shopped for purchased & wrapped for over 30 family members Christmas gifts etc... So it's a give & take! Sometimes (like now if you're overly tired) it's more take than give, but things will even out! Don't beat yourself up about it- you're growing a person, something he could never do!

  • I don't have hg but i'm not cooking either.  Sometimes we just eat cereal.  It's fine.  Someday things will be better again.

  • Yes. I've start to cook a bit more with the second trimester, but I've sort of lost the motivation and am out of the habit. Sigh...
  • I feel for you!! I have completely lost interest in cooking and food prep. I used to cook almost daily and enjoyed it.

My hubby has chosen not to hell so we eat what we eat for now ... I think the best thing we can do is make do!

Don't be too hard on yourself.
  • I second pp, try not to let the guilt get you. I struggle with it too. I don't have HG but I'm a bump on a log after work and DH does everything. He cooks or we order out when he's too tired. It's a lot of simple food. I struggle with feeling 'lazy', but as pp said-you are growing a human. And it will get better. Hang in there lady! Hugs.
  • I don't have hg, but with my first I was very sick. I would get home from work about ready to pass out, and it was all I could do some days to hide in the bedroom while dh made dinner.

Just remember it's not forever. The sickness will go away eventually, and as long as your dh is being understanding you don't need to stress yourself out.

One thing I did once in a day when I wasn't as sick was make up a bunch of homemade freezer meals to throw in the crock pot. That way it was just as easy for me, but a little healthier and less expensive. But that's only if you're feeling up to it

  • We lived on take-out in the first trimester and in our smallish town, that meant we ate the same thing over and over again (lots of pizza!). I've gotten back in the kitchen the last week or two (I'm 16w6d) but I imagine we'll still rely on take-out more than usual through the end of the pregnancy.
  • Yup fellow HG victim here. It's gotten better but I still hate cooking. I used to have a meal ready every night. I'm starting to get back into it by planning meals out for the week and use fast or easy recipes with few ingredients for example:
    my easy crockpot chicken
4 pieces of chicken (white or dark)
1 packet of Italian dressing powder mix
    1 cup water

Add water and arrange chicken in crockpot then sprinkle packet on chicken evenly. Cover and cook on low 8-10 hours. About ten minutes before its done I steam some veggies! Bam!! Chicken and veggie dinner!
  • Don't feel bad.  We hardly ever cook.  We usually have sandwiches, cereal, or frozen meals 4/5 nights out of the week and usually eat out or have take out a couple of nights as well.  DH works anywhere from 50-62 hours a week and I have a full time job.  I am hoping to get back into cooking more after the holidays.

I don't have HG and have been able to work, but I stopped cooking due to severe nausea/food aversions around week 7.

I'm currently 14+4 so my husband has been living off of take out, frozen meals and cereal.

Relax, you're making his child... And this too shall pass! :)

  • Don't feel bad about not cooking. My husband works a normal 40 hour week and has been doing the cooking. He needs help deciding what to make, what he needs to make it, etc and that's easy enough for me to help him with from a distance.

When I couldn't be around food smells we would put our crockpot outside or he would prepare food on the grill.

If you really want to make dinner, try throwing something in the crockpot but put the crockpot outside so you don't have to smell it in the house at all. NOT smelling food made a world of difference for me with the nausea.
  • I'm just getting back to cooking at 16 weeks and I was very into cooking pre-pregnancy (like cook all day Sunday plus cook at least two to three other days during the week).  H missed it no doubt but didn't complain.  Nausea alone is hard and its just starting to ease up for me...with HG give yourself a break.  One thing I kept making despite the nausea was snack packs for H (nuts with cheese packs, fruit and peanut butter snack packs, etc.) all pre-made in the fridge for him to grab.  It didn't make me sick to make those because it wasn't really cooking (i.e., the smells set me off) but he still had something easy to grab in the fridge. If you are too tired though, really try to rest.  Hopefully the HG will ease up over time.
  • I am spoiled and DH cooks most of the time anyway!!  If there is something special I want ---right now its pickle dip!!---I will make it myself.    He is pretty awesome like that :)

  • No HG but I was just talking to my Mom about this. My husband by no means expects dinner but I usually love to cook and feel awful that I haven't been cooking more frequently. I'm a full time nanny so after making B,L,D, cleaning up from all and taking care of the 4 kids all day I have zero desire to cook at home.
  • I don't have HG but I also haven't cooked in quite some time. I agree with PP's that you shouldn't feel guilty. After all we are growing tiny humans! It's a lot of work :)
  • I don't have hg, but by 5:00 I'm usually too exhausted to do much of anything so have been slacking on cooking the past couple months. Like some others here said, I used to enjoy cooking and did it almost daily, and just now starting to get back into it. But until recently we were having a lot of dinners consisting of cereal or sandwiches. Don't be hard on yourself - your body's going through a lot and it's temporary.

@augbride87 - what is in this pickle dip you mentioned?

  • Knottie86418473  It is pickle roll ups in dip form!!  DH hates pickles so he wont make it for me lol!!  Its so easy:  1 block of Cream Cheese, ranch (I just squirt some in), cut up pickles (I use Claussen), and thin sliced dried beef chopped up.  Its so yummy!  Sometimes I add garlic salt...really its just seasoning to taste :)

  • My poor sweet husband has taken over everything, including all the cooking!  My nausea is so bad, I can't even look at food!  He also does most of the cleaning around the house.  I do feel guilty sometimes but he knows I just can't do a lot right now.  It'll all even out in the wash, right?!?
  • Not only do I not cook, but I yell at my husband every time he cooks smelly food.

  • Yes I feel horrible ! I used to cook something every night and I am still throwing up at 14w6d... Honestly it's the last thing I want to do and I am living off of crackers anyway . Poor DH is an AWEFUL cook lol ... So far he has made ramen and served it in the pan lol and ground beef with canned corn ... We also live in the middle of no where so take out is not an option unless I go to town for something which has happened more often then not . So ready to stop throwing up and feel like cooking again, my body missed it and so does DH
  • There is hope! I made food on Monday and Tuesday. I'm 17 weeks tomorrow.
  • My neausea is mostly gone, but my smell aversions have not! I absolutely loathe the question of what's for dinner. I could eat takeout every night and be fine. I cant even handle the smell of the fridge right now.
