Cankles post delivery?

LO was born Monday night 12/7. Had an epi. We came home today and tonight I am noticing swollen ankles on both sides. Didn't notice them in the hospital. Shouldn't be a DVT from epi because it's in both feet. Is it just because I am not walking around enough?

Any advice on if this is normal would be much appreciated!!!

Re: Cankles post delivery?

  • If you had an IV in labour this is probably why. It's pretty normal, just up your movement and water intake, when you're lying down you could elevate your feet and calves. If you're very concerned def call your care provider :)

I did have an IV! Thank you!
  • Yes this is very normal! Should go away after a week or so. Yes to all of pps advice.
  • After I had my toddler, my blood pressure got really high and swelling was one of the things that came with it. Because of that, I was constantly keeping an eye out for swelling. This time swelling didn't happen until right before I left the hospital. The nurse told me it was normal and it "would probably get worse before it got better." She was right - it got worse for a day or two and then my feet and ankles went back to the right size.

For piece of mind, I did check my BP at home when I had the swelling and it was never high. If you have swelling, a headache, and weird vision, call the doctor - my girlfriend had all of those and ended up with post eclampsia.
  • I'm also dealing with post delivery crankles, was told it's totally normal, and can last for a week or two. Make sure to elevate your feet as much as possible and drink plenty of fluids. I have noticed that mine get worse with lots of activity/movement. Unfortunately they have to "run the course". I completely feel your pain though, hang in there!!

  • Same issue here but I got to experience a vaginal and a csection delivery a week ago. My cankles and sausage feet have just started going down yesterday, but only if I keep them elevated. Anything more than a granny style walk to the potty is awful. Maybe next week for exercise.
  • I didn't realize this was common until I was shopping for some post-partum clothes, belly bands etc and notice that the website only had compression socks listed in the postpartum section not the maternity section.
  • I had kim k feet CRAZY! It was like balloons
  • Omg yes, my feet are huge!! They were already size 10. I was surprised how swollen they are- did not know this was normal.
  • I'm so relieved to have found this thread. My nurses did check for swelling and we noticed some but when I was leaving the hospital it wasn't bad at all.

I woke up this morning what looked a little too close to diabetic ankles and I've been getting more anxious as the day went on. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Am now 8 days post partum and swelling has gone back down! Was fairly bad at 4-5 days. Hope it does for you as well!
  • So I had really bad swelling in my ankles and feet after delivery. I had alot of blood loss and they gave me alot of fluids so I didn't think much of it. Well the swelling was all over including in my boobs making it hard to breast feed. After 5 days I went back to the emergency room for a bunch of other issues but they gave me a diuretic called Lasix for the swelling. It helped pretty much immediately. I've heard the swelling is completely normal but it may be worth mentioning to your doctor if it's causing you issues because they do have things to help.
  • Yes! Omg. So horrible. My whole legs are just swollen! I made it almost to pushing him outF but his heart rare dropped so we had an emergency c-section. So........labor naturally from 5:30pm Monday to about 10:45am Tuesday, and then a c-section. Also, I had magnesium phosphate in addition to the regular IV, which I think caused the baby's heart rate to drop..... Too many fluids! I wish someone would have told me about the fluids and swelling.
  • Totally normal and the way the ladies explain it is correct from my understanding. Same thing happened to me. My entire legs, from hips to toes, were enormous for just under a week. I gave birth two weeks and two days ago and they're pretty much back to normal now. So it doesn't last forever.
  • Yes to the Kim K feet! I had pretty bad cankles.. None of shoes fit me due to the swelling. The swelling finally went down and my feet/ankles are normal after a week and a half! Elevate and drink water..
  • Mine got particularly bad because after the IV I was on during labor and delivery, I had to have 5 rounds of antibiotics since I spiked a 102 degree fever. Ugh, worst swelling ever. So bad that I had to wear DH's flip flops. Been home 2 days (PP for almost 6) and they are slowly going down.
  • Mine were fine until about 2 days PP. Then they turned into full blown cankles. Drink lots and lots of water. Keep your feet elevated even though its pretty much impossible with a newborn.
  • Mine are pretty bad. Entire legs, really, but feet are the most noticeable. I've been trying to sit down and put my feet up and not do things around the house. I'm 1 week PP right now.

The IV is the worst! I had fluids and antibiotics 3 days straight on to of pre-e. I lost 15 pounds when the swelling went down.
  • Wow... Since having my little one I have been out of the loop on here. That being said I am so glad to hear I'm not the only one with huge feet right now. I am 5 days pp and I'm just starting to see a bit of reduction in swelling. Today for our little ones doc appointment I tried to put on my nice new winter boots and they wouldn't fit! Winter boots... I was so mad!
  • Mine were out of control the first two weeks pp. Elevating them did nothing. I got compression socks & wore them for 2 days straight. Problem solved.

Compression socks made mine worse :(

  • I had swelling in feet and ankles that lasted almost 3 weeks! It's normal if you were given fluids. Lots of water, and feet evevatio.
