Swollen feet

In the past 2 days I've noticed quiet a bit swelling in my feet and ankles, I officially have cankles. How long does it take the swelling to go down after propping up my feet? When should I notified my doctor? Should I notify my doctor?

Re: Swollen feet

  • When I asked my doctor about swelling, he really didn't seemed too concerned. I know they check my urine every time I go in, so I know if that was the issue, they'd be more concerned. Usually if I prop my feet up for even an hour I can notice a difference in the swelling. Doctor told me just to watch sodium intake and that alone has helped a lot!

  • It is taking days for mine to go down. Weeks ago it was better by the next morning

Mine just came out of no where last week. Literally one day at work I looked down and they were comically large. I called my dr the next day because they were still swollen the next day (better but still big) and had started hurting. They told me to go home and put them up- the next day they were gone

ETA- now they swell up daily

  • Mine are swollen/pitting daily, and worse on work days because I'm on my feet for 13 hrs. Usually they're down by morning, except when I've worked along stretch of days, it usually takes 2 nights.

  • I have some Epsom salts and finally I was able to try them. A friend of mine got me a bag made with lavender and rosemary and after a 30 minute soak mine were almost normal.
I'm a size 6 shoe normally and I bought size 8 shoes for when my feet would swell, and the 8's were too small. That's how bad it was!
Maybe try something like that before putting them up?
  • Mine swell up a bit by the end of the day...pretty much every day. My midwife said it's totally normal. Baby is putting pressure on some of our veins and blocking a bit of blood flow, that's all. As long as your blood pressure is normal, you feel ok (no headaches, for example), and there's no unusual swelling of your face and hands, you're fine!

Of course, it makes sense to talk to your doc if you're worried. And it can't hurt to bring this up at your next appointment.
  • My fingers and feet started swelling two days ago. I had to get my rings off, because my fingers started losing circulation. Two days later and I still have them off. I think all the salt in the Christmas ham I ate triggered it!

I contacted my on-call doctor and he stated that because I am pregnant with twins and 35 weeks along I may have more swelling than usual(especially standing or walking). He said that as long as I am not experiencing vomiting, headaches or blurred vision with the swelling then I am fine. I will follow up with my doctor Monday at my appointment. So basically get off my feet and prop them up as much as possible.
  • My feet are like large sweet potatoes and our entire house is hardwood floors. Ugh :) Santa was very sweet and brought me slippers.

I knew swelling was one of the signs to watch for with pre-E but is also obviously a normal consequence of lugging around a basketball sized lump of flesh and providing life support for same LOL. So good thread!
  • I just noticed mine were really swollen last night. I was hoping it was just from being on my feet a lot over the holidays and it would go down. Woke up and still rather swollen still this morning. I've kept them up most of the day today (I'm also sick with bad cold so mostly stayed in bed/couch) and they've gone down s bit.
  • My hands and feet are swollen almost all the time, so bad that I sometimes go days without wearing my wedding bands (which I don't like :'( ). I told my doctor a couple weeks ago when it started, and mine is actually worst in the morning, so having my feel up all night. She told me to drink more water, which sounds funny but will help push fluids. Also, stay active, which I know is the last time I want to do right now, but I notice it sometimes helps me- not always! I would still mention it to your doctor that way she can monitor it and make sure you don't have any other symptoms that could raise a red flag. Good luck!
  • I had gotten some socks for Christmas but I can't even get them on my feet right now :(. Then today I noticed the pair I was wearing was slowly cutting off circulation and when I investigated closer I was surprised to find that I no longer have ankles. I didn't realize it was a cause for concern though, hmm. I'll keep an eye on it but I think it's just because I have way more weight to carry this time around.

  • When I was pregnant with my daughter the last 2 weeks I started getting mild swelling. This time around I have cankles and even my toes look extra chubby.

Mine usually goes away the next day.
