Gender based on sonographer hints

I had an ultrasound on Friday at a teaching hospital. They don't ever tell you the gender but put it in your report for your doctor/midwife to tell you.

So the sonographer asked the student what she sees and she said three lines. Then the sonographer took over with the wand and got a better view and pointed out the potty shot and he too said three lines.

So does that mean it's a girl?! The anticipation is killing me!!

Re: Gender based on sonographer hints

  • Why not just call your dr tomorrow for the report?

  • 3 lines = girl. Congrats!
  • Thanks Kristen!
  • I've always heard that "3 lines" means girl. Hopefully your doctor has the official results tomorrow!

  • I've also heard that three lines means a girl.

  • Were you able to see the screen? With my girls, it was pretty obvious there was no one is, and with this boy, it was glaringly obvious that there was. Congrats either way!! Sounds like a girl to me!
  • 3 lines is definitely a girl (if that's what they were looking at). Obviously only confirmation from the doctor will make it official :)

  • I did see the screen and definitely did not see boy parts, and saw the three lines they pointed out to each other, but I'm no pro at reading ultrasounds! Still no word from my midwife, I think I'll try call her tomorrow.
We're thinking of doing a fun gender reveal for Christmas!
  • Generally 3 lines means girl. When we had our ultrasound and they showed us the screen, I saw it right away and when she started to talk about "lines" my husband knew it too. Hopefully your dr can confirm soon!
  • We found out today that we are having a little boy. The ultrasound tech said boys look like a little turtle and girls look like a hamburger bun. Haha. I would assume that's would look like three lines. Congrats!

The tech actually said that? I would seriously be questioning the professionalism of said tech at this point. I can honestly say that my son's penis looks nothing like a turtle.

That is the conventional wisdom...I've heard it before, from our doctor during my first pregnancy.  It is a way of simplifying the image reading for those who have trouble seeing things clearly in an ultrasound image.  And our son did kind of look like a turtle in his ultrasound pic. :)

Must not be conventional where I am from because I have literally never heard of this comparison being made. I think it is creepy!
  • 3 lines is a girl.
  • They didn't put it in the report!! I just spoke to my midwife and they didn't add the gender... She's going to try call them and hope they still have the info! I know they say 3 lines is a girl but I just need that written down confirmation!!
  • @vanKusyk I would be so mad! How could they not include that?!?! Three lines is a girl, was for me anyway, but I agree with wanting confirmation.

    Keep us posted. :)
  • My midwife called the hospital and now they're saying I'm only measuring 18 weeks (SO impossible because I kept track and knew when we conceived because we really only did it ONCE without protection!)
And because I'm only 18 weeks they weren't able to tell gender so that's why they didn't include it! It was a pretty clear potty shot to me, but now I have no idea if their hints towards girl meant anything! So much for a Christmas gender reveal... A bit frustrating, but out of our hands.
  • I have heard of hamburger and turtle too! So funny! And accurate descriptions from what I hear
  • Can you go to one of those ultrasound places tomorrow if you're really wanting to do a Christmas reveal?

That seems really odd to me. Was it just because it was a tech in training that they couldn't tell the sex or are they saying that you can't tell at 18 weeks? We found out that we are having a boy at 16 weeks.
  • It seems odd to me too... IMO they forgot to add it in the report and didn't save the info so when my mw called they had no idea. Disappointing but not much to do now!
@hellogoodbye2 I'm not sure we'd be able to get in for one of those US and they are a few hundred $$ here, so not worth it.... Both my husbands parents and mine have birthdays at the end of January and beginning of February so maybe we'll do a gender reveal to them then!
  • @vanKusyk idk where you're located, but in bigger cities sometimes they have pregancy spas were you can have an ultrasound with a licensed tec for way less then the ones in the hospital. I'd do my research before going to one though to make sure they know what they're doing!
  • I just looked at the images from my AS and she had three clear lines between her legs. I'm surprised they couldn't tell at 18 weeks our doctor was able to tell us at 14!
  • @H0neyC0mb I'm in a big city in Canada, they're a couple hundred. It's Christmas and I don't have the extra $ right now! We didn't find out with our first, so I'm used to the wait. We just wanted to try something different with number 2 but it just isn't going the way we planned!

I understand that. I'd have to drive 4 hours/220 miles and then pay between $130-$300 to get an elective one done. Just plain wouldn't happen. Are they going to try another one through the hospital or are you now just going to have to wait until May?

  • I'll be having another one in a few weeks, I have placenta previa so I will be having a few more ultrasounds. So I guess it's not so bad in that respect that I will eventually find out the gender!
The placenta previa on the other hand kinda sucks....
  • Three lines are the baby's labia which means girl. Most ultrasound places don't comment on gender in the report unless it looks abnormal because it is not the reason for the anatomy sonogram. If they were asking someone else if they saw three lines it was probably difficult to tell. I'm a tech and little girls can be very stubborn lol. Boys are much easier to tell it's pretty obvious but with girls we just have to make sure there's nothing else possibly between the legs.
