Anyone else with asthma?

Hi ladies!

I have asthma that was fairly well controlled pre pregnancy.. I only used albuterol once in a while. Now lately it seems to be acting up at night! I called my doc to ask if albuterol is safe to take because I've had to take it twice this week. He said yes, but I need to see my asthma specialist because I shouldn't need it that often. In my drug guide albuterol is a category C which freaked me out. I can't get in with a specialist until March.

Did your asthma symptoms improve or worsen? What did you and your doc do? I'm trying to deep clean my house to see if that helps with triggers.. So frustrating!

Re: Anyone else with asthma?

  • I have asthma too and it seems to be worse with pregnancy. I also hate taking my inhaler since it's class C, but my doctor pointed out if I'm short of breath, my baby isn't getting enough oxygen either. That sealed it for me. Do you have allergies? I'm severely allergic to dust mites and I got those special protectors for our mattress and pillows and wash our sheets in hot water once a week. That helps some.

  • Bananers- that's a good point about not being able to breathe- I want my baby to breathe! How often do you use the albuterol? I do have bad allergies! I think I'm going to check into those protectors, is there any special kind or just the ones that say they are for allergies? Thank you!
  • I have asthma and my doctor said that pregnancy could exacerbate it. She said if it didn't act up, I was lucky.
  • My doctor said the same thing- That my asthma could get worse with pregnancy. I use Advair daily. It's still category C, but I have to breathe for my baby to get oxygen. I don't have to use my Albuterol very much. Hope yours doesn't get too bad. As for the specialist, did you ask to be put on the cancellations list?
  • @squishy0511 I probably end up using it twice a week on average. As for mattress protectors, look for the ones that are specifically for dust mites. We had to enclose our box spring, mattress, pillows and shams. I think I also might look into getting a humidifier for our bedroom. I think the dry winter air is making things worse, on top of the pregnancy.

  • I have asthma too! Mine rarely flares up unless I get sick or am having allergy issues.

Do any of you ladies know what nebulizer meds are safe? I'm planning to ask the OB tomorrow, but in the meantime I've just been using saline because I have to do something until this sickness goes away.

My OB actually told me that asthma usually improves in pregnancy, if it wasn't severe before.

  • Oh, forgot to say; I have allergy covers on my bed and all pillows, and also have two HEPA filters in the house. I really feel that they help prevent the triggers.

  • I also have asthma, but very mild since adulthood and usually symptoms are only brought on by illness or extreme workouts. I've been sick with some type of sinus infection/cold the past week and a half but haven't had any asthma issues yet.
  • Hey Squishy!   That is so cute, we're calling ours "Sticky" in hopes that will entice our little zygote to STICK ;)

Asthma - I'm so glad you wrote about it.  I am SO SHORT OF BREATH.  I am on Symbacort, which has been approved by my doctor, however, I still find that after exercise and even just walking to work or waking up, the struggle is real.

I have a mental note to follow up with my doctor next visit!  I'll let you know if I find anything out!
  • Thank you so much ladies!! I feel so much better now knowing I'm not the only one! I ordered some allergy pillowcases and mattress covers so I'm excited for those to come in. Hopefully all of our symptoms will improve!!

Meredith- awe sticky is cute!! We liked squishy because of finding nemo, hehe!
