Breastfeeding

4 days old refusing to latch, HELP!

first few days after baby was born she latched fine, the day we were released from the hospital she started refusing to latch, full blown arching back, flailing hands, etc. It has now been 3 days and because she was refusing i had to supplement formula, the lactate specialist and her ped says to keep trying, which i will but she only take my milk that is expressed and i"m afraid she is not getting enough, what can I do, I want that personal experience with my NB.

  • Try pumping or had expressing for a few minutes before you put baby to breast so she doesn't have to work as hard right at first and gets a little taste. Breastfeeding is hard...keep at it!!

  • Try placing her as close to your nipple as possible and drip some expressed milk into to corner of her mouth. Basically try to trick her into latching. This worked for us! Also skin to skin with her laying on top of you to encourage her to take your nipple. Good luck and keep it up! It's hard at first but hopefully it'll click for her!
  • could it be reflux? arching his back could be a sign
  • Have you tried a nipple shield? It can help give baby something larger to latch onto. I found it helped those first few days. I also found at first that if I could get her to suck on my pinky, I could then pop it out and she would latch onto my breast. I second hand expressing a little to soften your nipple and get the milk flowing. My LC taught me to compress my areola and kind of shove my nipple into her mouth, it helps her to latch on.
