Do beta hcg levels correlate with heartbeat being detected on u/s?

We went to the ER for some spotting after intercourse. They determined I was barely 5 weeks along, so all that could be seen was a gestational sac and what they thought might be the yolk sac. My hcg was 3327, and the doctor mentioned something along the lines of not seeing much for those levels. We've never had an u/s this early, so I didn't expect to see much anyway, but his comment has me concerned. I didn't think hcg levels would correlate with it since every woman's levels can differ even at the same gestation.

I'm having my levels checked again today to ensure they're rising, as well.

I hope that all made sense*. I feel like I'm rambling at this point.

  • If I had a nickel for every person that came on here with questions after an ER visit, I'd have a nice chunk of change. I don't have the answer, but I do know that ER doctors are not OBs, and their knowledge of pregnancy is relatively limited.

  • I remember reading that the heartbeat shows up when the hcg is near 30,000. For your levels to be at 3000, you are pretty early in the process. When I was pregnant with my first, the heartbeat did not show up until my levels were around 33,000. I was heavily monitored as well.
  • Not sure about when the HB becomes visible but I know that the fetal pole is supposed to be visible once HCG gets to 5,000
  • HB becomes visible between 5w5d and 6w2d typically in my experience.I'm not an ultrasound tech or a dr I just work for a ob/gyn /family practice.
  • The chart below shows successful hCG numbers in single pregnancies. As you can see, your numbers fall into the realm and you won't see heartbeat at five weeks along.

  • Not sure about the numbers but my RE wouldnt schedule my viability ultrasound until 6.5 weeks because of the possibility of not seeing the heart beat until then, which would have caused more harm than good for me mentally.  Usually I think an OB would schedule a follow-up for a week or so later to see how things are progressing- if your doc doesnt do that (my OB doesnt do ANY ultrasounds til 20 weeks, my RE did), if your bloodwork shows your levels still going up considerably then an ultrasound wont necessarily be needed but still shows the pregnancy progressing.
