Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

mmc and blood type

I thought I would have more time to ask this question to my doctor and with the news of a likely mmc last visit, totally forgot. I haven't started to officially miscarry yet. The baby likely measures around 7 weeks. I am Rh neg and my partner is Rh pos. Should I be concerned, what can happen if I do start bleeding? Do I need to go to emergency immediately? Does anyone have experience in losing a child that was Rh pos and they are Rh neg? Sorry if this is long winded, despite my loss, my body is betraying me and still is waking me up in the middle of the night, so my brain is foggy. Thanks in advance for any anecdotal replies.

Re: mmc and blood type

  • I know my doctor asked me when I went in for my mc, but I'm Rh positive. She mentioned something about not needing a certain med (rhonon or something? I don't remember the name) because of it, though, so I would check with your OB. I wouldn't rush into the ER, though. Just call and the nurse or doctor at your regular office will give you the instructions you need! I'm sorry, and good luck.

  • Thanks. I thought the emotional loss would be all I had to worry about. Now I am learning all sorts of scary shit. :/
  • They will probably want to give you Rhogam to make sure it doesn't cause any problems with future pregnancies. It won't cause any issues with this loss. From what I've read it is kind of up for debate whether it's even really necessary for a miscarriage, but they like to do it just in case- the issue comes in when some of baby's blood mixes in with yours and sets off your antibodies, causing your body to attack a future pregnancy, but that is much more likely to happen during labor then during an early loss. I'm guessing that they're doing a followup appointment in a few days? I would ask then, or if you start to bleed give them a call. I don't think it's something to panic or go to emergency for.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Exactly what @FiancB said. No need to worry but they may give you a Rhoham shot.

    So sorry for your loss.

  • I am Rh neg and I have had a rhogam shot after both my miscarriages and with my ectopic pregnancy. I have also had it with my 2 births, I think somewhere around 28 weeks but I'm not totally sure. This recent loss was a missed miscarriage and I took cytotech so the doctor had me get the shot last Friday morning, then I took the cytotech and I had some bleeding Friday night so I think I'm covered. I think I recall that you should have the rhogam within 72 hrs of bleeding, but I would call your ob to make sure of what they recommend. I'm sorry for your loss!

  • I'm also Rh neg. I used cytotec to induce my mc so I wasn't bleeding yet, I was given a Rhogam shot when the loss was confirmed.

    I'm sorry for your loss.

  • Thank you for your info and kind words.
  • Yeah, I just went through all of this and was told to get the shot within 3 days of starting to bleed. Then, the shot is effective for 6 weeks. So even though my miscarriage lasted a week plus, I'm covered as I got the shot just before day 1 of bleeding (from cytotec)

  • Started spotting on Saturday, got my shot on Monday, main part of my miscarriage Tuesday. Yesterday I had an u/s, the tech said little.... I think everything is good. Unless anything comes up I have bloodwork on the 28the and doctors appointment on the 30th. I am so ready for this process to be over so I can take the time to heal emotionally. Bring on 2016.
