Is a Mamaroo worth the hype?

For my first child, we used a Fisher Price swing which was noisy and bulky. Additionally, he tolerated it for 5 minutes so it didn't even seem worth it to keep in the living room. I'm tempted by the Mamaroo's slim profile and sleek design, but the price tag is making me wary of purchasing. Did anyone find it to be particularly life changing, or am I just letting their sweet promotional marketing graphics and catchy music sway me due to these pregnancy hormones?

Thanks and hope you guys have an awesome weekend!

I always liked the cradle n' swing ones. It can swing sideways or back n' forth. It has lights, songs, and a moving mobile. My daughter loved hers. You can get them for $100 brand new and I see these on sale for much cheaper at the buy sell trade sites. Mine was gifted to me.

  • I've only heard this from others moms and have no experience with one, but it seems like either your child will love it or hate it, so make sure to keep your receipt and be in a 'returnable' time frame in case your child is the latter!
  • Story time! I have an acquaintance who was obsessed with the mamaroo and convinced it was going to save her sanity with LO#2. He arrived and didn't like being in it at all. I'm sure for her it was not worth the hype.

  • DS loved the swing, didn't care for the mamaroo. My friend's son was the same way. There were other moms on my last BMB who said their LOs loved it. So it seems to be hit or miss.
  • DS1 hated *all* swings and bouncers, so I'm hesitant to get DD anything new at all this time around. I like the concept of the mamaroo and have heard good things but I'm not sure.
  • My friends have one and I think it was fine but it wasn't anything they raved about.
  • DD needed to be held to nap when she was super tiny so I took my registry reward gift card and bought one. She really liked it and was happy in there during the day awake as well as some naps. Not sure what the experience or difference would be with a different swing but probably smaller footprint than traditional swing.
  • My friend swore  by it. She said it was the ONLY thing her daughter would sleep in. So when she found out we were expecting, she sent us one!

I don't know yet if baby will like it. Hopefully she does.

  • I have a friend who has one and loves it. Hers is the Macked out one and is gonna sell to us for $100. This is our 5th boy but I have no swing or bouncey or anything because our last baby (he will be 3 in a week) hated all of that stuff... whoopsie... now I need stuff again!
    Fingers crossed Elijah likes it
  • Agree with PPs, your baby may love it or not care for it. See if someone has one you can borrow to test before buying, or check your local BST pages, craigslist, etc to buy a used one if you really want one!

  • I would include this in the category of "borrow first if at all possible". We got a bouncer for DD instead of a (portable) swing and she HATED it. So after borrowing a swing and her loving it, we now have both in storage for this babe. Not the end of the world because they were $50 and $70, but I would be kicking myself for spending multiple hundred on a Mamaroo if it sat unused. If you can borrow one from a friend for the first couple months you can find out if it's worth paying for or if it will end up a dust collector.

  • I want someone to put me in a mamaroo - they look so comfy! I am sure I'd fall asleep quickly :-p We registered for one - I figure, if someone gets it for us - yay! If not, I can decide to buy it or wait it out.

  • Does the mamaroo provide the same movements as a bouncer AND a swing?

  • @yodiggity - Sort of. It has a couple different movement patterns, which ups the odds of your child liking it

We never used a bouncer, just the swing, and our son would sleep in it thank goodness. In the beginning it was the only place he would sleep! I would never pay full price for a mamaroo (but I'm a little cheap :p) but I have seen them on my local mom page for $100, which isn't *too* bad.

  • Thanks for all the help! I'm also far too frugal to pay full price, but am wary of spending money on the mom swap sites since I'm then out $100 with no return policy or warranty claim opportunities. Since I didn't hear that the Mamaroo will change my life dramatically or overwhelmingly for the better, it looks like I will hold off for now. :)

  • Love how the mamaroo looks. But it did nothing for our son. I seriously don't know anybody in person whose baby liked it.

I was thinking of getting cause it just looks so cool. :) But no one seems to like it. What should I get then? A bouncer?
  • Honestly our savior was the fisher price snug a something swing (snugabunny, snugapuppy, they're all the same). But every baby is different. The thing is, they're basically floppy nothing's at first and so we had a baby contraption in basically each room as somewhere to set him down. But if he was super fussy, the mamaroo did literally nothing. The center of gravity doesn't move, it sort of just hovers, and it's super slow. It's relaxing to watch, but I can see why it doesn't calm most babies down. Do you have friends who you could borrow some contraptions from and see what he ends up liking?

Not really, no one I know here has a baby... I'm 34 and late to the game, and 99% of my circle of friends is older than me, most with kids past toddler age.
  • My friend Bethany has one of these an her LO has slept in it from day one and loves it. Baby is 2 months now.
I'm going to register for one and see

I've had friends and family swear by rock n plays and bouncers. I registered for both :) DH was itching to register for the mamaroo too but after hearing expereinces from others we decided against it.
  • I loved our plainest bouncer. Simple, took up no room, and super portable. You could use your foot to bounce it or just let the kid hang.
