Trouble TTC

DH on Clomid - Anyone have any experience?

So we finally got the test results (the details of the journey I wont bore you with lol), and DH's numbers were ok, his sperm was on the low side of normal (which is better than he usually is).  The only thing the Dr was able to see that may have effected his count was that his testosterone was slightly low, so he prescribed a medication to help.  He made sure to let us know that it isn't a sure thing that the medication will help raise his count, but we figured it wouldn't hurt to try.

Out of curiosity I decided to google his medication, and I was surprised to realize it was Clomid!  I didn't realize that it could be prescribed to men too.  Happily, he isn't having any side effects.  Has anyone here ever had their SO on it?  Did it make any difference?

  • My husband was put on it for low testosterone levels. I didn't notice any side effects. But still not pregnant. :( He's been on it for a year. But I have issues also.

  • Hi.  Yes, my husband has been on Clomid for about four months now for low T levels.  We aren't scheduled for another sperm analysis until January, but I will tell you that he feels A LOT better.  Not tired after work anymore, he works out 3 to 4 days a week now -- after a full day of work.  He's not as moody, either.  He loves it, I don't need a blood test to tell if it's working, he's like a new man.

Good luck!  I'm sure the Clomid will help. =)

  • My DH was just prescribed it yesterday from the Urologist but the doctor was so up in the air about it. He even said "Does it work? Meh, no one knows". He also told my DH that if he feels any side effects to just stop as the medication is so up in the air that it wouldn't be worth taking it.

I am very lucky that I work with a pharmacist at work every day and over the past 4 years has become quite a close friend so I was able to talk to him about it this morning. He would fill the script for us, but my work benefits don't cover it so it would be $150 for 25 pills. He also said that it was so off label that he would rather do some more research for us and help us with a better medication plan in the new year.

I'm assuming it isn't as popular here in Canada?

Did your benefits cover your scripts?

@JessicaJordanHall I do like the sounds of your DH's experience!

  • I'm glad it sounds like it's working well for your DH so far! My DH was prescribed it for low T and to hope it helped his numbers. He took 25mg every other day for three months. It dramatically increased his T level, but he never felt any different - no extra energy, etc. which was a bummer. He did a repeat SA after 3 months and his counts were the lowest they've ever been, which was heartbreaking. His urologist told him he doesn't think it's the Clmid, and hopes it's just a fluke, but since the Clomid wasn't working for his intention (+ count not T) that he should stop. To be fair, I also stopped two of his supplements during this time (Vit E + Selenium) so I've since added those back in. He's doing a repeat SA in a couple of weeks just to give us some peace of mind (hopefully) and then another in 3 months. I truly hope your DH has a great response to it!

  • I saw this thread awhile back but it didn't apply to me until now!  My DH was prescribed clomid last week by the urologist our RE referred us to.  My DH has low sperm count and very low baseline T (less than 200 without meds).  He's been taking a testosterone gel (androgel) for the last 7-8 years which has helped him feel human.  The urologist is tapering him off the androgel because he thinks that could be contributing to low sperm count and prescribed clomid instead (50 mg every day).  DH has been on it for 6 days now and he feels GREAT.  He's more hopeful and optimistic than I've ever seen him!

@starlitfae and @JessicaJordanHall - are your DHs still feeling good on it now that it's been a couple more months?  I'm feeling great about how good my DH feels currently but it hasn't even been a week yet.  I hope this continues!

  • My DH feels fine on it... unfortunately it didn't seem to help him. We took a month off after he started taking it, and the next month his counts were even lower.

  • @starlitfae I'm so it didn't help with the count :( Did your DH have a blood test to check if it helped T levels?
