Christmas Cravings

This year MIL has given me a green light to not cook/bake anything (I'm still going to make a dip bc I feel bad not doing ANYTHING). This will be my first Christmas with DD's family (ever). I'm not sure what to expect. Do you have staples you eat during this holiday?? Anyone making something super yummy?

Re: Christmas Cravings

  • Lots and lots of cookies/homemade candy. MIL makes them every year for her gifts and we always end up with a massive tray. I'm really looking forward to it this year. Other than that it's usually just the stereotypical holiday food.
  • Loading the player...
  • I like to make candied pecans. Beyond that, it depends on the year and what everyone else makes. We usually have pizelles and a few other kinds of cookies. On Christmas Eve, we do 7 fish, pasta, and appetizers. Christmas day I'll make orange-cinnamon pull apart bread for breakfast, some appetizer-is lunch, and beef and/or ham for dinner with Thanksgiving-type sides.
  • Peanut butter fudge brownies :) it's just brownies with a really simple pb fudge you put on top, sprinkle with mini choc chips and let chill in the fridge until the fudge sets :) delicious :) I'm making them for DH's family party on saturday, and possibly my own family on Sunday :)
  • My dad makes prime rib which I'm looking forward to more this year then ever, now that I'm such a meat eater.

My favorite holiday food that we always have is Yorkshire pudding (aka pop overs), they are amazing and I can't wait!
  • We're having prime rib.... Mmmmmm. And sweet potato casserole. And probably some other stuff, too, but that's what I'm looking forward to.

  • Pumpkin cheesecake !!!!
  • Christmas Day my mom always does an easy lunch/dinner buffet style. She always has sandwich stuff, Swedish meatballs, mini hot dogs in a cranberry jelly, and chip and dip. It's not a fancy meal at all but it's the only day we have them and I always look forward to it. I've yet to use the eating for two excuse but just might on Christmas
  • Sweet potato pie! Or really any kind of pie....

  • just looking forward to not cooking :)  I still don't like cooking these days (which is so not me).  I have to bring something for Christmas Eve.... still don't know what and I don't want to go shopping.

  • The only thing I make consistently year after year are Buckeyes. If you never had them they are balls made out of peanut butter and confection sugar and dipped in chocolate to harden. Delish!!

This is our first holiday just staying home thre two of us, so the pressure is on to make yummy things. Besides the Buckeyes we have two other cookies that we can snack on all day. I'm making a breakfast casserole in the crockpot. Dinner is stuffed Cornish hens, toasted Brussels sprouts with bacon, and a sweet potato dish with apple and cranberry. Dessert is pumpkin bread pudding.

    Oh god I'm hungry....

  • Looking forward to my great aunt's German Nut pudding. It's our family's recipe that has been passed down generation to generation. I need to learn how to make it. DH loves it!
  • I can't wait for honey baked ham with pineapple slices! Ohhh, yumm! My mom was reviewing the menu for Christmas Eve and morning and I have been obsessed with having ham and pineapple ever since. It just sounds so freakin delicious!

However, we always have pork roast with pearl onions and new potatoes for Christmas day supper, but the onions (which I can usually eat like candy) sound so insanely disgusting. I also can't choke down any Christmas cookies, which is so out of character and bizarre. So really, I am having more aversions to holiday foods I used to love. Bummer.

  • Ambrosia salad is a staple in my family and it's easy to make and bring to someone else's dinner

  • Prime rib and crab legs! My family has this meal once a year on Christmas Eve. It's my favorite meal of the year!

PIZELLES! We also have tarallis. I can't wait!

Christmas is one day of the year that my grandma makes homemade pasta and makes ravioli and lasagne. I'm drooling already. I love being Italian.
  • Christmas at the in-laws this year.  My MIL makes a huge prime rib - usually very rare!  Even not pregnant, I'm more of a medium girl, so they save me an end piece!  honestly, i can't remember what else she makes....but I will eat it.

  • A few years ago my mom started getting a buche de noel for Christmas eve. We did a pre-Christmas last night since my sister's going to be gone, and so mom brought out the cake then. Then she brought out a tiny, super dense, super rich chocolate cake just for me, because she got a coffee flavored buche de noel this year, and I hate coffee. I felt like such a brat, but I almost started to cry right then. I haven't been into super rich things since I'm pregnant, and everyone else had been drinking all night so I already felt left out, and was exhausted and kind of falling apart. My husband convinced me to try the buche de noel because it wasn't that strong of a coffee flavor - so I got to enjoy it a little, but it still tasted really weird to me. So there's my sad, spoiled daughter Christmas food story.

On a happier note, I'm hosting Christmas morning for the first time, and going to have a big pancake breakfast! We've always done coffee cake, but I realized I get to set my own traditions since it's at my place, and I love pancakes!

DH and I are not really into Christmas, but my parents are jolling in Europe at the moment so baby sis (22) is alone and I felt sorry for her - so I am doing Christmas this year for her.

At Christmas, my mom usually makes Lamb Roast with all the trimmings (baked potatoes, rice, salad and veg) and then one or two other meats. Or we'll have a braai (barbecue). So that's what I'm doing.

For pudding we'll do Ice Cream (to cool down).

My dad's homemade cinnamon rolls. It's great grandma's recipe he's perfected over the course of my life. So delicious!!!
