Random Registry Etiquette Question

I am pretty much using my registry as a way to keep a running tab on EVERYTHING we need- right down to nursery rug. I would never expect anyone to buy said rug or noise machine (as examples), so would it be weird to leave it on there? I don't want anyone thinking I am looking for gifts or asking to decorate my whole house. Whats the norm here? Should the registry be only for what you would ask for gifts, ie, toys, bedding, etc...

And @ladysamlady, I blame YOU! I am obsessed with babylist now...

Re: Random Registry Etiquette Question

  • I'd leave it on there since there are the completion coupons, etc. When gift giving I usually skip over  some of the decor. Just not as fun from a gift giving stand point, but I don't give it a side eye.
  • Loading the player...
  • Agreeing to leave it. Plus, you never know what someone might buy.

  • These days most retailers give discounts for the things on your registry so put any and everything you intend to get for LO. There is probably enough variety that your friends and family can find something they are comfortable buying you, so don't worry
  • We have a rug and some other smaller things (including a noise machine) on ours and we plan on leaving them. In fact someone already got us the noise machine! You'll be surprised what people will buy for you :-)
  • Thanks. I never did a registry before (not even when we got married) so not totally sure what is appropriate and what would make the "that" girl

These days most anything is acceptable. On our wedding registry we had a gun safe (which we actually did get) and friends of ours had WD-40 on theirs (common in the competitive lumberjack world to clean and protect the saws and axes).

I have a dresser for the baby's room and a car booster seat for my DD on my registry right now. As I'm a STM, I'm only sharing the links with the grandparents but those two items are still there. Some might consider them odd but my mom actually bought the dresser.

  • Glad @yogahh asked this because I was wondering the same thing but felt I was being rude by having an expensive stroller on my list (which I would never expect someone to buy for us). I was considering doing two registries, a public and a private but that seems kind of crazy.
  • I agree. Just put everything on there. I was using mine as a list to keep track of what we needed too! Very handy :)
  • Put it all on there. Like pp have said, you'd be surprised at what some people want to buy, and also I think that most people expect everything to get listed there since most stores have completion discounts and such.
  • I like to buy unique gifts in registries so I enjoy lots of random stuff! And it people don't buy it for you they might get a gift card knowing there is more you would like. :)
  • It's perfectly normal for a registry to be a list of things you want to get. That way, after people have purchased from it, you can see what more you need!

  • I forgot about the deals you get afterwards! Now as a second time mom I'm wondering if I should do one and tell no one about it...

That's what we're doing. We've started a registry just to keep track and to get the discounts but we're not telling anyone about it.
  • And you can set it to private I guess...

I am doing this too. We only need a few things this time around but if I can get a discount by putting them on a registry, I'm gonna do it!

  • I agree with putting it all on there. When I get someone a gift off their registry, I usually decide how much I want to spend first, and then I just pick a gift that falls within that range. To me, the whole point is I am getting someone something they want/need and I don't make a judgment on what it is. If it's a rug, it's a rug!
  • On the subject of registries:

Is it necessary to register at more than 1 place?  I feel as though I got pretty much everything I needed at Target, but a few people were confused when I didn't have a second registry at BRU.  Am I missing something?

Totally up to you. With DD, I had an Amazon one (for people who prefer Amazon), Walmart (the primary one and everyone had access to WM), and diapers.com for diaper covers. We only have one BRU in the state so wouldn't have been worth it to me or my friends/family. I don't even have a Target. If everyone has access to Target, I see no reason you would need another one.

  • I wouldn't exclude anything either. Personally, I like a lot of choices when buying off of someone's registry.

    @Aquinna82
    - I only registered at Babies R Us the first time around. Some friends asked why I didn't have a 2nd (which I thought was a silly question to begin with) and I just told them BRU had everything on my list.
