Hair Loss!!? Why is the world so cruel..

So today in the shower I was running conditioner through my hair and a huge clump of hair came out. I didn't even feel the slightest pull. I almost fainted. I'm a FTM and had no idea this was yet another effect of having a baby. I've had 2 people tell me this was the case. Anyone experience this? When did it stop falling? Did it ever go back to normal? I've stopped taking my prenatal, should I start back up again? Thanks.

  • The same thing is happening to me! It looks like cousin It lives in my house. I have to clean my hair brush after each use. I'm also a FTM so I don't know how long this lasts. It started around Thanksgiving and seems to be even worse now. I feel like I have no hair left! Sorry I have no answers, but I just wanted to let him know that you're not alone in this.
  • It's happening to me too
  • Me too!!!!! It makes me so sad. I don't have thick hair either so I'm freaking out.
  • Same here! I haven't had a whole clump fall out like that but tons and tons of strands. I'm feel like I'm shedding like a cat!
  • Are you all still taking your prenatal vitamins? I'm still taking mine daily and it contains iron and biotin, both of which are great for your hair. Prior to taking a prenatal I had very thin hair and it had a hard time growing ... once I started taking prenatals (2-3 years before TTC) my hair got thicker and grew so much faster.

I'm 16 weeks pp and haven't experienced any hair loss yet, but not sure if that's a result of taking my prenatals, still breastfeeding, or just luck. But definitely doesn't hurt to keep taking your vitamins!
  • Definitely experiencing it.
  • Same thing happened to me last week. I was ready to call the store where I bought my shampoo and threaten to sue. I was so scared to get out of the shower for fear I was bald. It was enough for a wig! Hope it stops soon
  • I'm still taking prenatal and breastfeeding full time and I'm losing clumps like that. I've always had thick hair and always lost a lot of hair but it's getting ridiculous. I spend half my time in the shower just combing loose clumps and strands out and I have to clean out the drain after every shower.
  • It's normal and it sucks! It started around three months with my daughter and lasted about two months. I changed my part because so much of my hair in the front fell out I looked bald!! My hair started falling out sooner this time and it's awful.

  • I'm still recovering from my first! It's definitely an adjustment especially after spending 9 months not losing a single strand.
  • 15 pp and im shedding too. The worse part is combing it, it's always SO tangled! No matter the conditioner, detangler spray, you name it, I have tangles and they hurt. :'(

Buy a "wet brush".... Hair still falls out but brushing is so much easier, quicker and painless!
  • My brush needs to be cleaned out after every brushing.
  • Thank goodness for The Bump. I had no idea this was a common post-pregnancy issue and I was starting to get a bit worried! I've been losing more hair than typical, too.
  • Oh my goodness, this is soooo me, it feels bad and its frustrating to me because i bought lots of hair lenghtening products that cost me alot, i was happy they were working and just of a sudden this started, i shampooed and then conditioned the hair, just for me to comb it i was crying out loud because i was wondering if it was my fault to use those products together or if any of them were expired, i had to double check and nothing like that, so this is normal!!! I am 3months pp and also a FTM
  • I'm not loosing clumps or really that much, BUT my son gets his hands in it at he base of my neck. OUCH! I am constantly redoing my bun or pony tail to try to keep his sweet little hands out of it. He always finds a way. Lol.
  • I'm 3 months postpartum and losing tons of hair too. I was so concerned about it that I made a doctor's appointment. She said it's all hormonal and will improve with time, but it could take up to 6 months! YIKES. I can't imagine 3 more months of this, there will be no hair left! She said there's not much to do about it, but continue to take prenatal vitamins and eventually it will stop on it's own once the hormones are all in line again. Hope yours settles down soon!!!
  • I just bought post-natal vitamins for the nursing mother. I pray it will help!
  • Normal.  Sorry.  It'll eventually grow back.  Don't stress.

  • I have chunks coming out! I had it before I got pregnant but it's definitely worse now! It a all over the house and I feel like baby girl is always covered in my hair!
  • I was contemplating cutting my hair before these episodes, but now I think I'll do it for sure. My hair is really long but now looks just blah & flat. I'm gonna take a few inches off and see if that gives an illusion of more hair ha!

Oh my goodness, yes this is me too. I have been close to chopping it off myself in frustration because it seems it won't untangle. I run the brush and then it goes back to tangles. And yes I think cousin IT has come to visit. I'm so depressed over it I just wash and wear to avoid it at all cost.

  • Yes this is also happening to me! literally chunks of  hair are coming off, I started taking my prenatals again to see if this helps!
  • Totally normal. Your hair typically sheds less and gets thicker during pregnancy, then you have a big postpartum shed. I had it with my first and it just started again. I take prenatal vitamins and EBF, so I don't think either of those things prevent it.
  • @Sully3302 hey thanks!! I just saw ur response, anything helps :)
