Supplements to support pregnancy advice?

I apologize for the long winded post but here it goes! I started bleeding and cramping on Sunday after some brown spotting on Friday. Friday I should have been around 4 weeks but was told my HCG that was drawn on Thursday was only 13. Saturday I felt fine just kind of tired. I was scheduled to meet with my new OB on Tuesday but I called them on Monday morning letting them know I had been bleeding similar to a period since Sunday morning and the breast tenderness and nausea I had been experiencing had subsided.
They brought me in Monday morning and from what I told the doctor he thought it was a chemical pregnancy since I recently had one in November (yes, my levels returned to 0 before trying again). He said he wanted me to start taking progesterone, baby aspirin, and high dose of folic acid to avoid a 3rd miscarriage and ordered a blood test to make sure my HCG dropped from the 13 it was at on Thursday. I didn't have a pelvic exam done, it was just a consultation to see where I was at history and levels wise.
Much to my disbelief I got a phone call from him yesterday saying my HCG actually went up to 44 so he was calling the supplements in for me to start ASAP. I'm on 400 mg of progesterone, high dose of folic acid/Vitamin B, 81 mg of baby aspirin, and a general prenatal vitamin. Some breast tenderness has returned as well as some nausea has returned but I'm not sure if it's from the progesterone even though I'm aware that symptoms come and go. My mom who is an er nurse said chances are it was a threatened miscarriage or breakthrough bleeding. Still having a small amount of spotting though. Hardly anything but some pink when I wipe. Is anyone else on this regimen or been on it before? Just curious to know what the success rate is.

Re: Supplements to support pregnancy advice?

  • I'm not entirely sure what the success rate is or anything, but after having a m/c in October, my doctor checked my progesterone immediately with this pregnancy (I got my BFP at 10 DPO) and I was put on 200 mg prometrium (my level was 11.6) almost immediately. I'm now 7w1d and just had an ultrasound this morning showing a beautiful heartbeat and a growing-right-on-time baby!
Best of luck to you, mama.

  • Congrats and thank you! Having the doctor call me ready to start the regimine was comforting, I'm hoping that's the issue and that I'm able to carry this pregnancy to term. We had been trying since March with no luck thinking it was going to take some time to get pregnant. Having 2 pregnancies back to back, even though one was lost has been so encouraging!
  • I am also on progesterone as a support measure. I had a miscarriage in September and generally low progesterone during my cycles (consistent spotting before my period starting at around 5 dpo). My OB had me get my levels checked the day I got a BFP and started me on progesterone right away. I just had my first ultrasound this afternoon and we saw a beautiful little heartbeat! FX all goes well for you!
