Large breasts, baby breathing

We have no problems in the football hold, but while in the cradle hold or the laid-back position, I feel like LO can't breathe. I have to hold my breast back or her nose gets buried. Any tips on how to make it easier for us? She's 4 weeks.

Re: Large breasts, baby breathing

  • I am in the same boat. My son is six months old and I still hold my breast most of his feeds. I wish I could give you some tips or suggestions, unfortunately I haven't figured it out yet. I am at home with him so for us for most days it isn't a problem, it is difficult out in public. We also have an upper lip tie, so that also makes things a bit difficult. Good luck and congratulations on your baby!

  • Also in the same boat, was a "Victorias secret 32DDD" before I got pregnant. So a real 34D lol I had to compress myself because I was afraid of blocking his nose. He's 17 weeks today actually and he can manage. All I can say is they get bigger quickly and you don't have to worry. The boob sandwich hold actually helps with latching anyway.
  • I think my daughter was 3 or 4 months before I didn't have to hold my boob up to not suffocate her. I'm having to do the same with my 3 week old. I tend to lay down and nurse a lot because it's easier, especially at night.
  • If you are comfortable with the football hold, keep up with it!

Just so you are aware, infants noses are specifically designed by nature to flare when pressed against the breast so that they can breathe. Also, they are born with a reflex to automatically pull their head back if their nose becomes blocked.

If you are really concerned about it, be particularly cognizant during those nursing sessions when you are sleepy. As long as LO has room to move their own head they will be safe. The danger arises when one is too tired to keep proper posture and/or the baby is in a poor position and can't move its own head.
