Anybody else have a cold? How are you treating it?

I suddenly came down with a horrible sore throat halfway through the day. I am reluctant to take any medication and we don't have anything safe in the house anyways. I'm eating soup and I am going to put on the humidifier tonight. What are you guys doing??

Re: Anybody else have a cold? How are you treating it?

  • I've had a bad one for about 4 days. A bunch of coworkers and family are sick too but they can take all the drugs they want and I'm jealous.  I've been using one of those Otravin saline and saltwater thingys to clear out my nose (it works for about 10 mins and then it's back to stuffy hell)  and I found some cough drops that are pure honey with no medicinal ingredients. That's all I've got. If you search though I think there was a thread about colds and the flu a few weeks ago that might have better suggestions.

  • I will definitely have to look for those cough drops. Whoops, I did a search but I looked for the wrong thing. Thanks, I will check it out.
  • Vicks vapor rub helped me.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I'm dealing with a sinus infection and it's my goal to avoid medicine in the first trimester. But I know there's some cold meds that are considered safe. Humidifier helped me a lot, lots of rest and A LOT of fluids. Drink drink drink! OJ and water are my top two. (Lots of water!) Good luck and I hope you get some relief soon!!!
  • Tylenol, sudafed, and robitussin dm are all safe during pregnancy. Don't be meserable if you don't have to.
  • I have a cold too. Here's what I am doing:
    1) Puffs plus tissues because I don't want to deal with a raw nose on top of the sinus stuff.
2)Saline spray to keep my breathing passages moist (yes... moist)
    3) loads of fluids (water with lemon and tea)
    4) unisom to help me sleep (okayed by the dr)
    5) tylenol for a headache
    6) Thieves oil mixed with olive oil and rub on my chest, neck and feet.
So far all of these things have been working... i'm on day 3 and feel way better!

    Good luck!
  • Thank you for all of the advice!! My cold has now progressed into a fever, throwing up, and bronchitis. :( going to try all of these things but I am also going to call my midwife. I am feeling pretty horrible.

These are the ones I was talking about. I called in sick to work today because I felt like death and 4am me just wasn't having it. Currently drinking tea under a blanket on the couch watching Married at First Sight. No regrets.
  • Tylenol for aches/pains and sore throat.

This isn't entirely true. Sudafed and Robitussin and most cold medicine should be avoided during the first trimester.

I am just recovering from a sore throat and cough myself. It was awful. Basically I stuck to tea with honey and lemon juice, gargling with Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water, cough drops, and Tylenol to manage the pain. Also Vicks vapor rub at night.

Im 11+4 and accidentally took a teaspoon of mucinex an hour ago and realized 10 minutes after I took it that I shouldn't have. :-(
  • Anyone have any suggestions for a chest cold? I have something in my chest but coughing doesn't always loosen it :/ I would normally take mucinex for this. Its so bad that I can't talk all the time, when I can my voice cuts out and I sound manly.
  • That's what I currently have @Arinii. Basically just sitting in the shower a lot, putting a towel over my head with a bowl of steaming water, and blowing a humidifier in front of my face. I have found drinking lots and lots of water has helped loosen it too. My friend made me some tea to help with the soreness from coughing, but that's all I am doing. Not fun at all!! I feel your pain.
  • I lost my voice Christmas eve after talking with my family all night, had it back Christmas morning and completely lost it again that night after chatting with DH's family. I feel a bit better today but I'm still pretty miserable. I have no suggestions, just commiserating.
  • I've been sick since Tuesday night, first a terribly runny nose then so congested! And today I'm still blowing my nose like crazy but it's also moved to a chest thing w cough! I've tried a humidifier, Vicks vaporizer, hot showers and steam and nothing has helped at all! I'm just waiting for it to run its course! Hoping I'll be feeling better before I go back to work Monday!
  • A few weeks ago I had a horrible sore throat. I pretty much get it every year around the same time and it usually lasts at least a week. My doctor told me to take Tylenol Cold Sore Throat Liquid Cool Burst. It worked wonderfully. It soothed my sore throat immediately and I was only sick for a few days. My doctor also said Robitussin was ok to take but I can never keep it down.
