3rd Trimester

Leaking

I'll be 39 weeks on sunday. When I use the the bathroom and when I finish I am about to leave the bathroom and I have a little gush of fluid. Is it pee or is it the start of labor? It has happens 3 or four times today. But not a lot to say it's my water breaking. Enough to notice. No pain just tight feeling or bloated feeling.

Re: Leaking

  • We can't really tell you what kind of fluid it is, its very common to mistake vaginal discharge with waters breaking and even mistaking urine for it. The best you can do is call your care provider and explain to them what is happening and follow their instructions.

  • Honestly I'd say it's probably pee but I'm not a doctor. If you're concerned you should contact yours. Also, just so you're aware, you can actually get a small leak in your water.

  • With DS my water broke just a tiny bit at a time. The first time I thought I peed myself then it happened about 10 minutes later. I called L&D and they wanted me to come in to see if it was my water and it was. They broke the rest of my water. If you think it your water call and tell them what's going on and see what they say.
  • I agree with calling your doc, but just as an FYI/different answer:
The same thing started happening to me around 24 weeks. I called my OB and went to L&D to get it tested to make sure it's not amniotic fluid/water breaking. Everything was ok, it's just a gush of watery discharge. This still happens a few times a day after leaving the bathroom or if I stand up suddenly. Sometimes it has been a little bladder leakage as LO gets bigger, but at any rate, if your experience is anything like mine, it's likely not labor. But just make sure you call your OB! :)

  • Baby is on the right side leaning into my bladder. I always pee and then can pee more after I move or clench my muscles. I assume it's urine at least I hope it is.

This happens to me quite a lot. Also when I sneeze. I was tested for fluid leakage on Sunday at labour ward because I was having irregular contractions (I was 36 weeks). They confirmed it was not fluid. If you are leaking you can put a pad on, try lying down for an hour and then getting up. If you feel a gush coming out then call labour and delivery - they'll very likely want your to come in and let them examine the pad, they will want to see it. Good luck and try not to worry
  • Call your doc. It could just be urine or discharge, but my sil had the same thing and it turned out to be true leaking. They ended up needing to induce her because the amniotic fluid was too low.

  • I would go to the doctor
  • Same thing is happening to me. I am 39 weeks and randomly during the day and night I will feel like I've peed myself. When I go to the bathroom to check and wipe, it's like water. No colour, texture or smell. If it were amniotic fluid, wouldn't it be a constant and consistent leak? Not something that happens at random? Very weird...

It can be random. If it's a slow leak it may come out as your body moves to different positions. When is your next appt?

  • Next apt is tomorrow morning, I'll be sure to ask!

Definitely ask. By the time I got to L&D with my kids I was barely leaking anymore, so they checked by using a little paper strip to test whether it was amniotic fluid (of course at that point I had soaked through my clothes but I guess they check to be sure). I would imagine your doc does something similar to see if it's just urine, sweat, discharge, whatever. Best of luck!
