Can & Can't

There is probably a list somewhere but I can't find it. Can I eat cream cheese? I know we aren't supposed to eat soft cheese but does cream cheese fall into that category? Also, when is it safe to color your hair? I know not in the first trimester but... TIA

Re: Can & Can't

  • Cream cheese is ok, any cheese is as long as it's been pastuerized. I use the app Ovia Pregnancy and it has a list of meds and foods that you can and can't eat, I use it a lot. Enjoy your cream cheese :)

  • You can color your hair too...eat all the cream cheese. :) seriously some of the dos and don'ts are kinda silly everything in moderation is how I look at it.

  • I had my hair colored at almost 5 weeks and I'll be doing it throughout. I have been using an ammonia-free line (Redken Chromatics) for years, and this time around I had the stylist use foils to prevent the dye from touching my scalp. I have the Mayo Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy, which does a good job of outlining the why of what you can and can't do.
  • Yes - you can eat cream cheese and color your hair. I think my Google now auto populates "in first trimester" once I start typing "can I..."  :D

This.  Almost any cheese you buy in a normal grocery store is pasteurized.  I plan to eat copious amounts of cream cheese icing over Christmas. :)

  • The issue with cheese isn't soft vs. hard, it's whether or not it's pasteurized. Even feta cheese is usually okay as long as it's pasteurized, and most feta in American grocery stores will be (with the exception of some locally made cheeses). Just check labels and you'll be fine.

I don't color my hair, but from what I've heard you should be safe at any time. If you're worried though, you can ask for natural dyes or semi-permanent dyes that won't be as chemically.

  • @kcolly32 thanks for the tip on the Ovia Pregnancy app! The food list of do's and don't's is great!
  • @Bubblegum5586 we've already quoted this way too many times this pregnancy.

The only thing my OB wanted me to not eat was sushi (which I don't enjoy anyway) but the more I read, it seems like even that may be okay.

yeah, i eat sushi regularly and don't plan to discontinue the favorite part of my diet- just sticking with safe mercury levels.
  • The risk with sushi is possible contamination of raw fish. If it's a reputable place where you've never gotten sick before, it's probably fine. Still shouldn't have a ton because of the mercury content, but a roll now and then is fine.
