silly hospital bag question

I've done my research on what to pack in the hospital bag and pretty much already have my bag ready to go.  I know for me i'll need toiletries and a robe, but what about a going home outfit?  Will I still be wearing maternity clothes at that point?  If so, I don't have an outfit that I'm not wearing to put in there.  What are you packing for your going home outfit?  Please forgive the silly question.

Re: silly hospital bag question

  • FTM here as well but pack something comfortable. I've been very much warned that there is no way you'll be back in 'regular' clothes for a little while and will likely still look about 5 months pregnant when checking out. Personally I plan to have yoga pants and an oversized shirt.

  • Go with something comfortable. Sweats and a comfortable shirt or yoga pants. I'm planning on bringing my maternity leggings because I think they will be most comfortable to come home in.

  • STM here, although my experience is a bit different because I had a csection, yes you will want something maternity or oversized to wear home.  I breastfed and lost the bump super quick, but still chose to wear a maxi dress home.  I'm unsure exactly what I want to wear home this time simply because I can't wear a maxi dress home in February!  I'm also packing a robe and nursing nightgown for in the hospital.  I'm probably going to pack a couple of my husband's tshirts to wear in the hospital too.  I don't have any yoga pants yet, but was considering buying a pair to take to wear at the hospital.  I may even just wear yoga pants and a tshirt home.  I'm much more interested in comfort, and I'll be having another csection so I've gotta protect that too.

  • I am bringing yoga pants and oversized tee for my going home outfit.
  • I wore a non maternity fold over jersey-knit skirt from Old Navy home last time, but it was August. I'll bring that again this time and yoga pants.. Since the yoga pants rubbed on my incision last time in the hospital and I'm not sure if I'll end up with another section. Oh, and a maternity shirt and old lady undies for the giant pad.

  • The first time around I brought leggings to wear home but couldn't get myself to put them on over the giant pad and mesh undies I was still sporting - felt like everyone would be able to tell! I'm looking for a pair of athletic pants are looser and wide leg to buy to wear home this time. I wore a nursing tank and zip up hoodie/jacket on top and will probably do the same this time. I know it's kind of silly but for some reason I want to look somewhat put together. Wish it was going to be warm instead of February because a maxi dress sounds amazing!

I'm the same way - I'll wear yoga pants, but probably with a tunic or long sweater to cover my butt. I feel like everyone can see that pad. I bring extra pants, too, because with both of my first two babies I randomly bled through the pad onto my pants shortly after putting them on:/

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • I'm throwing a couple pairs of yoga pants and a couple of long shirts and oversized sweatshirts or sweaters in there for going home.
  • It depends. My friend left the hospital in her pre-pregnancy jeans. I brought comfortable yoga pants and a t shirt last time.
As far as things that need to be packed but you still use, what I did was to put a sticky note on top of my hospital bag for last minute items (like my flip flops which I didn't want to pack away, and sweat shirt I was still wearing before going to the hospital). I ended up being induced so I had plenty of time to pack before going to the hospital, but in case I went into labor, I kept the bag with the note on top in our bedroom, and instructed my husband as to what those items are, so that he knew to pack them if he had to bring the bag to the hospital without me.

  • Yoga pants, a maternity/nursing top, granny panties, nursing bra and flip flops. The only other thing I am bringing for me to wear is a sleep nursing bra.

  • Yes to the flip flops, too. My feet were incredibly swollen from the fluids given, and you also want something to go in the shower with (yes, they clean the showers, but staff track stuff in and out on their shoes that you don't even want to know about. Also why you should never walk around barefoot.. At least have thick socks on).

  • @VitaLuna ewww...that's really gross but i'm sure so true.  I've honestly never thought about it before.  But you've made me think about it now... :)

  • I wore home a maternity wrap dress (in March, in freezing temperatures) because I still looked 6 months pregnant. I decided on this because if I had ended up with a c-section, I wasn't sure how any of the regular clothes or maternity pants would have hit the incision (luckily, I had a vaginal delivery, but I like to plan for all possibilities). And as others said, I didn't want any form fitting pants because I'm self conscoius about the giant pad and other items causing a potentially strange looking buldge in my underpants. And I definitely second the shoes recommendations. My feet were soooo swollen, they would not have fit in my everyday shoes.
  • A nursing tank top is a good idea. I wore one with a light sweater. Also pack a couple pairs of bottoms. Sometimes you may leak after and then there goes a pair of pants. Deodorant is a must too, and your own shampoo, etc!
  • FTM so no experience with this but I'm going with pajamas all the way. I don't care how I look, everyone (by that I mean possibly MIL and my nurses) will be looking at the baby anyways!
  • FTM, but I'm planning on a pair of under the belly maternity yoga pants I bought online from Target- they're amazing w/ some kind of oversized sweatshirt/jacket thing.  I just want to be comfortable.
  • I went home in my pre pregnancy jeans, just picked my biggest and comfiest pair to fit the giant pads. But I packed maternity pants as well just in case.
  • Last time I went home in a maxi skirt, but it was super warm. This time I have packed a pair of maternity jeans that I don't love but fit just fine. I don't really wear them because I'm not a fan of the wider leg, but they look fine and are comfortable. I also packed a pair of comfortable black sweat pants in case I need a backup plan. They aren't maternity but I can still wear them under my belly. I packed a nursing tank, a comfortable shirt and a thin cardigan for tops. The shirt and cardigan aren't "maternity" but I fit fine now.

To be honest, I am planning a homebirth so I hope not to need this hospital bag. However, I have the darn thing packed because if I end up needing it I don't want my husband to attempt picking out anything.
  • With DD she was born in August so I wore baggy gym shorts and a tank top. This time I'm bringing baggy sweats and a hoodie with soft socks and slippers. I swelled up like a balloon after I had DD so my normal shoes would have sucked. Also, and this is just my preference, but I definitely am not wearing yoga pants lol. I'll be wearing the biggest pad ever which will be super obvious in yoga pants lol. Also my vagina felt like it got hit by a bus last time so I'm not wearing anything remotely tight around there either. Big ole granny panties and baggy sweats for me lol
  • With DS I wore leggings, a cami and a cardigan and wore mukluks for shoes home from the hospital (November). I have never had to buy any maternity clothes, so I can't give you any advice on that, but everyone is different. Just prepare to wear something comfortable.

  • TTM second time cesarean. I bring 2 pairs of sweat pants and comfy pj tops since I will be there for a few days. To go home yoga pants are great but be cautious they can be snug around the waist especially if you are having a cesarean. Slippers are a must to have and have comfy socks too! Robes are nice if you are going to have to stay more than a day. Just remember comfort is key.
  • I couldn't imagine even wanting to go home in jeans.. Yuck. Things were so sore and heavy down there I wanted maximum comfort. I used a pair of comfy sweat like pants and a baggy shirt after my first two labours but lounged in pj pants while I was there. This time around baby has to stay in the NICU and it's 2 hours from where I live but I'm still not planning on bringing a real pair of pants or jeans. Just sweats and leggings and big shirts. I definitely won't be stylish, but I'll be comfortable ha. I'd say pack something comfy, and make sure it's a bit larger than pre-pregnancy as you will still have quite a belly when you go home.

  • It is never below 78 degrees where I live, so a dress is a great idea. I had actually worried about what to wear also, but after reading this I think I will get a comfy dress on clearance after Christmas. Anyone ever worn jockey brand undies? They are sooooo soft.
