Acne/cystic acne

Any other moms out there have trouble with cystic acne? My face is breaking out on my chin horribly! I don't know what types of options I have that are safe for the baby. The acne got bad a couple months after stopping the pill and has continued to progress since finding out I am pregnant. I will be 6 weeks on Wednesday.

Re: Acne/cystic acne

  • First I love your screen name. We are a packer family my kids are 4th generation packers fans.
Second I have cystic acne it got really bad in the first trimester and then at the very end of my two pregnancies. I hate using any acne cream because of the chemicals in it. I went to my dermatologist and they actually lanced the really painfull ones but other than that I pretty much had to suck it up with warm compresses and calamine lotion.

I don't have cystic acne but during my last pregnancy my skin was worse than its ever been. I wish I knew the answer because it seemed nothing can combat what these hormones do to us. Mine was also mainly on my chin and I've already started breaking out horribly. I use make up as little as possible.... keep hands away from face if possible. I hope its not too terrible for you :( almost all my break outs recently are under the skin and hurt so much!
  • One of the girls I work with would make some kind of hot salt water mixture to clean her face and then exfoliated with a good microdermabrasion paste. She said that really helped control some of it. The salt water makes sense to me that it would help rid bacteria.

  • My chin is so bad! I know salicylic acid and benzo peroxide are out. Has anyone heard from their dr if sulfur acne products or clindomycin lotion are ok?
  • I've had acne issues in the past (teens then early 20's). When I started the Nuvaring my face cleared up and has been perfect. Throughout my 1st pregnancy, I had some small breakouts on my face (and some on my back), but nothing horrible. Thought that wasn't so bad.... However, about 1 month after I had my daughter- OMG, my face was the worst ever. It hurt so bad too, I was embarrassed to leave the house! One day I was on line at the store and a little boy in front of me said "Mommy, what's wrong with that ladies face?". I went to the derm and they gave me some safe products to use while I breastfed, but honestly it didn't work. I anxiously awaited until around 10 weeks post partum to get back on the ring, once I finally did it cleared up over the next 4-6weeks. My skin looks great again. But, of course I am worried it will happen again!! But- knowing it did clear up pretty fast after getting back on BC I will be more hopeful this time.

  • I've suffered with cystic acne sense after the birth of my first son 13 years ago. I have tried everything topical and a few medications, but nothing really stops it. I have just resolved to it being hormonal and hopefully when I hit menopause I will finally have clear skin. Anyways, my best advice is to leave them alone. Get a good concealer and ride it out until your immune system takes care of it. They hurt and look awful, but they do go away eventually. If you don't mess with them they will not scar. You can put topical stuff on them, but it is in my experience that stuff does not work until they are more on the surface of your skin. I have also read that in small amount most of the active ingredients are ok, but not in consistent or large amount. I hope things improve for everyone. My face usually clears up during pregnancy bc my hormones level off. I am actually thinking of seeing an endocrinologist after this pregnancy to see if they could target what the hell is going on with my hormones that creates the acne.
  • I have cystic acne, and generally isn't a problem when in BC. Also, with my 2 boys, my face never looked better. This time, I've had these 2 large cysts for the last 4 weeks. They are painful and suck. I do know if I try to get rid of them, it will scar, I have a large one on my forehead. So I'm just dealing with it. Hoping 2nd tri will level out hormones and things will be ok.

  • My face and body have breakouts all over it is awful. I don't remember having acne this bad with my first pregnancy. I am hoping things get better during my second tri.
  • It's so nice to hear I'm not the only one with bad acne!! I've asked my doctor and short of a hot compress and moisturizer, théres not much else we can do until baby isn't reliant om our bodies. I just keep reminding myself there's an end in sight
  • I have struggled with cystic acne the last couple of years and finally found a product pre-pregnancy that had started to really take care of the problem. That is out now that I am pregnant and aside from a few pimples, it hasn't been too bad - yet. I have no doubt things will get out of control soon though. What I have found that is natural and works the best is apple cider vinegar. I get the Bragg natural kind and dilute with a little water and then use a cotton swap to wipe on my face - like a toner. The vinegar smell does goes away once dried and I put lotion on.  90% of the time, it clears up the pimple by the next day. If it is cystic, it takes a few days but it does help. Biggest thing is to not pick!
