  Bloody streaks is a sign but they still say you can do like that for days. I was 0cm at last appointment the 15th. But last night started having contractions 5mins apart, once it lasted an hour called OB like instructed, she said go to hospital to get checked out. They hooked me up and said contractions were 2-3mins apart which shocked me, but really not dilated. Instructed to walk the halls for an hr to see if any dilation. If not then sending me home. 36wk 5 days (Jan 12th). After an hr of walking checked me again and they said I thinned a bit and progressed but not enough to keep me. They believe I am in early labor. This morning contractions are still going but wasn't told to go back unless unbearable, bleeding or water breaks. They explained that being dilated didn't really matter without contractions. If you are having constant regular contractions that are causing dilation then sign of labor. At least that's how they explained it to me.

  You can walk around at 3cm until 42 weeks. Dilation means nothing at this stage. You can go from 0 to 10 in two hours or you can take a month to go from 3-4. There are several other threads about this question on page 1, if you'd like to search a bit and read about other's experiences.

  I walked around 3 cm and 50% effaced for 5 weeks with my first. Delivered at 41 weeks.

  Same here with my first. I was 3cm at 35.4 weeks and had to be induced at 41.5wks

  I was 3 cm with dd at 36 weeks and was induced. I don't think it means much but will admit that it makes me feel better to know my body was progressing.
