Possible to show with no weight gain?

Hi ladies! I am technically due on June 1st but being the first due in that group, sometimes makes me want advice from moms that have gone through what I am.
That said, I am 17 weeks and have gained 0 lbs. I'm not worried about it because my doctor says it is fine. BUT I think I look like I'm showing... Not just bloating or anything else. Did this happen to anyone else?

  • Totally possible. The weight shifts around--you could be burning some fat/muscle mass/losing water weight. The baby and uterus still grow when this happens. I didn't gain anything more than a few pounds until a few weeks ago but still had a bump before then.
  • Yes because when you show it's not so much the weight your showing- it's your enlarged uterus popping out.
  • Also depending on how active you have been, you may actually be losing muscle tone. I hardly worked out in the first tri because I felt so tired and I lost a few lbs (and I wasn't throwing up, just nauseous) and I was definitely not eating super healthy (mostly refined carbs). Once I started the second tri and working out I realized just how much muscle I had lost which I am sure accounted for the weight loss. I am 19 weeks and it is coming now! If your doctor isn't worried at your next appointment then I wouldn't be worried. Just make sure you aren't like, starving yourself or something.
  • I found out that I'm diabetic so have been following an extra healthy diet....lost 6 pounds but the doctor is not concerned at all. And I have a huge bump!

Wait a minute. You say on one thread how we are unsupportive and rude and then you create this to get answers from us? Yes? Am I getting this correct?

    Anyways. I agree with kbrands.

  • I really don't know what's going on here... People like to start drama for no reason.

Back to your topic. I noticed the same thing! Only gained 2lbs and my stomach grew a lot in the past 3 weeks! It looks way more than just 2lbs. I'm not concerned as well, I'm pretty sure many more pounds will follow! But hey, at least we don't need to maternity pants at this point lol
  • 20 weeks today and have gained 3 pounds total. Doctor isn't concerned. I started at a healthy weight too.

  • I've been showing since 8 weeks (freakishly large blump) and I'm still down 3-5lbs. I had terrible morning sickness that still crops up from time to time. I'll gain about 35-40lbs as usual by the end.

  • I have gained 2-3 lbs now and I am at 21 weeks but a belly started making an appearance before that weigh was gained. Seconding what previous posters said about the 'bump' being your enlarged uterus shifted further up your stomach (as well as your displaced organs shifted upward as well). If you gained 0 lbs during this pregnancy your bump would still get huge. However the baby would likely be drawing from your body's fat reserves (and nutrient reserves).

This reminds me of another post not too long ago...
  • I've lost almost 20lbs since getting pregnant, and I was about 15lbs overweight to begin with. I have a bump and have stayed consistently at th same weight for the last two weeks. My dr wasn't concerned and said my uterus was growing at the right rate. My bump is way more defined when I lay on my back but is showing a little bit through my shirts now. Although, I can still wear my regular pants, the waste line was getting uncomfortable for me so I did go to maternity pants and yoga pants because I do a lot of bending and lifting at work. I'm 18w5d today! I say as long as your doctor is happy with your weight you should be good :)
  • I'm down 20lbs and showing. Totally possible.
  • I gained two pounds then lost one, and I am most definitely showing at this point. Totally possible, albeit mindblowing.
  • How are people LOOSING weight? Seriously, whats the secret? I am up almost 20. My dr is going to flip her shit.

  • I lost a lot of weight in the begging because of horrible all day sickness, so now I'm back up to pre pregnancy weight, but I still have a big bump (pregnant with twins). I agree with the PPs that it's more about uterus growth then weight gain.

And @yogahh I think some people lost weight in first tri from sickness and I also have heard of people who are already overweight losing weight in pregnancy because they change their diets substantially plus the added calorie burning of growing a baby. But I could be wrong. I don't think your doctor will be too concerned since that would be about a pound a week? Again, could be wrong.

My first pregnancy I lost 10lbs my first trimester. I wasn't overly sick but eating and I didn't agree much. I'd have a few bites of whatever actually sounded good and then I'd be done. I was actually more sick this time around but also starving all the time (hence, none of my maternity pants from last time fit this time...).

  • @yogahh I was about 15lbs overweight prepregnancy and during first tri I had crazy food aversions I'd eat a bite or two here and there. I also cut out almost all caffeine and increased my water intake dramatically. Then I got the stomach flu and was on a liquid only diet for 4 days. Not much nausea or morning sickness though. My dr didn't seem concerned and im sure I will start gaining soon as week twenty is right around the corner! I feel huge though lol

Morning sickness. I still have it at 20 weeks, so I take Zofran every 8 hours. I had laryngitis from vomiting multiple times a day and lost 10lbs in less than 2 weeks. It was gross.

I'm down a few pounds still at 18 weeks. I didn't have any morning sickness at all and no food aversions. I do think I get full much faster. My only craving has been for oranges. I haven't changed my activity level at all either. At some point I am sure I will have to slow down, and then I suspect the weight will add up quick.
I'm not showing at all though.
  • Omg, I completely forgot to include the point of the last post. (pregnancy brain I guess?)
My theory is I'm losing weight because I am not drinking. I think I might have had more beers and bourbon per week pre pregnancy than I realized.
  • I've lost about 5 pounds so far and i am definitely showing. I'm losing belly fat as the bump gets bigger. I'm 18 weeks with #2 right now.
