High-Risk Pregnancy

Preemie with GA or Epi

I'm in a unique situation. I have a collagen disorder so there's concern for my uterus rupturing as baby grows and blood vessel rupture. Carrying until full term and a vaginal birth are out. My doctor wants to have a planned C-section under general anesthesia at 34 weeks. He's concerned with the risks of epidural but I don't know if it's worth the risks of general anesthesia instead. Obviously I'll be speaking more with him about it but he just informed me of the plans at our first consult with the high risk ob. I have a few weeks to gather info before I'll seem him again. My mother actually went through the same thing as it is a genetic disorder and her doctor chose to deliver me by c-section at 38 weeks with an epidural. So comparing the two has me further questioning my doctor's choice. Anyway I'm looking for some insight from y'all on the differences and obviously some support as this is pretty difficult.

Re: Preemie with GA or Epi

  • This is a unique situation.  Ask your high risk OB if he/she has any referrals of patients with similar conditions. I hope you can at least find some similar stories on the internet.  Good luck with your decisions. I assume you are delivering at a hospital with at least a level 2 nicu (ideally level 3)?
From what I know about general anes c-sections - pain control can be more of an issue than with an epidural or spinal.  But of course everyone is different.

  • I really had no idea there were different level NICUs. I will definitely be adding that to my list of questions. The doctor did already tell me that the baby will have to spend 1-3 weeks in the nicu.

  • No experience with your condition, but my baby was born at 34 weeks because of off the charts bp/ pre-e. He was super small because of my condition (just under 3lbs) and only stayed for 3.5 weeks! He would've gone home much sooner but he was just so tiny! I had two rounds (two shots each) of steroids for his lungs, and he never needed any breathing intervention ever! He had almost no health issues except for being small!
