Bronchitis

I've had a cough/cold for 2-3 weeks and I finally went into the doctor and they said I have bronchitis! I got prescribed antibiotics and the doctor was very reassuring that they wouldn't harm the baby, and that actually being sick with bronchitis was worse for them. I've been so good about avoiding everything but it seems like I couldn't avoid this one. I'm wondering if any other mamas have been sick and needed to take medicine?

Re: Bronchitis

  • Yes. I'm on an antibiotic right now to help me recover from a cold that progressed into bronchitis and an ear infection. Last pregnancy, I had an ear infection each trimester. There are effective category B antibiotics out there; don't worry, if your illness requires an antibiotic to get better, it's worth it to its take the medicine rather than allowing yourself to get worse. Working in schools, it's almost impossible to dodge all of the germs.

  • Thank you for the support! I'm usually one of those ultra hippy "just diffuse some peppermint oil" girls but finding out its bronchitis and that prolonged bronchitis can reduce oxygen to my baby made me RUN to the doctor!
  • @jomunson That was a good choice-- for me, between the infection and having asthma it was causing me multiple asthma attacks per day to try to fight if off alone. I figured between the two, the antibiotic was better than continuing to take my rescue inhaler multiple times per day (antibiotic class b, most inhalers are class c). I started feeling like  could breathe again within 24-36hrs, then slowly but surely better over the next few days. I hope you recover quickly!
@yogahh no worries! Colds are awful-- take care of yourself so it doesn't get worse!!!
  • @kbrands7 Bronchitis with asthma is awful! I always end up on antibiotics, steroids, and still having to use my albuterol. Feel better guys!

Thanks! I just feel lucky to have been able to dodge the steroid this time. I had a script for one and was told that if I was still having asthma attacks after 24hrs of antibiotics to start taking it.
  • Hope everyone starts to feel better soon!

I just picked up an inhaler prescription because most winters I end up with asthmatic bronchitis and some years it sticks around for months. Started a bad cough this morning so I'm hoping taking the inhaler now will help keep everything open. Fingers crossed!
