I'm very skeptical of essential oils. I think they're glorified perfume and a bunch of malarkey. <<<<< There's my disclaimer.
I'm also a hypocrite. I was taking a very low dose of Elavil before getting pregnant to treat anxiety. I had severe PPA after the birth of DD and waited way too long to be treated but Elavil was my miracle drug. It's not safe for pregnancy so my doctor took me off of it.
She prescribed something else that made me feel like absolute crap so I threw it out after 1 day. My anxiety is manageable without drugs, but they definitely make life easier.
This week is really difficult on the anxiety front. I had a difficult first appointment and I'm scheduled for a follow-up ultrasound on Monday to see if this will be a viable pregnancy. I'm a basket case. I'm having a really hard time keeping it together.
My sister is the family hippie and she suggested this anxiety blend of essential oils. Is anyone here familiar with EOs? Are they safe for pregnancy? How exactly do you use them?
I'm skeptical but I think they're relatively harmless so I'm willing to give it a try.

Re: Essential Oil Hocus Pocus for Anxiety?
I don't know what is safe or not, I bet that you'll get some responses. Maybe certain brands are safer, but I would think as long as you aren't ingesting it it should be OK. I'm sure someone will know better though, so don't take my word for it.
I know we're a long way off from PPA/PPD, but pre-partum anxiety and depression is also a common but ignored problem. I'm here if anyone else wants to chat about it. I'm always happy to share my own experiences.
I think adding an EO to a bath might be the thing I try. Thanks for the tip.
When my anxiety is bad I like baths and have started putting in a couple drops of the Lavendar in it. On a non EO fix I've started listening to guided meditations since my anxiety gets bad before I sleep and it's helped me a lot
I went to a doterra EO "party" where they try to sell you stuff and they had a booklet with a list of EO safe/helpful for pregnancy and for which trimester. I think if you are going to apply any directly to your skin or ingest, definitely do your research about the specific blend and buy from a reputable company. Hope you find something that helps!
I also have anxiety and ADHD and was using medical cannabis to treat but now nothing because well... the research on the effect of THC on a fetus is varied and inconclusive. My midwife, OB, and I agree: better to err on the side of caution.
My symptoms have gotten worse since I have been pregnant, but about 5 months ago I started (at the suggestion of my therapist) a meditation practice. I've found it more challenging of late but it is still super helpful when I have recurrent and obssessive thoughts. I use the Headspace app. I also continue with therapy.
Oops got of on a tangent there.... anyway, I say give the oils a try, but keep talking to your doctor and they will hopefully work with you and your symptoms. Sending you (non-obsessive) positive thoughts and best wishes!
If you have any questions, let me know and I can try and steer you in the right direction!
edit: I forgot to mention that I am talking about pure oils. I would not recommend using any oils with synthetics or fillers.
As for warming them up, it will smell great but won't be as effective for treating anxiety. The heat ruins the compounds in the oils. Best way is using a cold water diffuser. Just for your information
The only oil I really liked was the peppermint for headaches. To add, I was using a diffuser and while it they didn't help my anxiety, they did help me fall asleep faster at night.
Good luck - I can really relate to you on this. I was never medicated for my anxiety and I think I'm going to look into it after this pregnancy.

Good luck getting your anxiety under control - I truly understand how difficult it is. For me, my mind wanders when I'm not active/busy and that's the worst time for me. I'm hoping I can keep it under control the rest of the pregnancy and after LO arrives. I am definitely going to talk to my Dr. this time around instead of just living with it!
