Magnesium supplement?

Anyone taking one? I think I'm going to ask my MW about it (although I've read it's safe) to hopefully help with the muscle cramping and constipation. I've recently started taking extra iron for anemia, and even though it's chelated, it's wreaking havoc on my already obnoxious GI tract.

I'm going to see if she's ok with me taking Natural Calm, since some of the local naturopaths recommend that brand.

Re: Magnesium supplement?

  • I'm not taking magnesium... but i do take an iron supplement that does not constipate me at all... my midwife suggested it during my first pregnancy.. its called floradix iron and herbs... its a liquid. I get it at wholefoods... you might wanna try it. Works great for me, i have GI issues too... good luck..hope you find something that helps soon! Tummy pain is no fun at all.

  • I take 400mg of magnesium everyday to help with my migraines. And they're so much better this time than last pregnancy. I don't know if it helps with GI issues but I have no problems in that area
  • My midwife recommended one for my GI troubles. I haven't gotten one yet though.
  • My OB recommended it to me for charlie horses

  • I take magnesium. I've been having big troubles with number 2 this entire pregnancy so I was told to take it. It's not the answer, but I do feel it helps a bit if I take it regularly so I say definitely give it a shot!

My dad swears by that brand! I've never taken it during pregnancy, although I too have heard it's safe, but I used to take it when I was running/exercising a lot and I couldn't believe the difference it made with muscle cramping.

  • I'm wondering if maybe it will help with the BH contractions a little bit, too. They have been pretty annoying and uncomfortable this time around (I only remember having a handful last pregnancy) but my MW said they only worry if it's more than 6 an hour.

They don't tell you everything is more intense/annoying the second time around.
  • My midwife told me to start taking them for my BH. They got so bad in Saturday that they turned into real contractions. They were ten minutes apart for a few hours. I was starting to get nervous. She said taking a magnesium supplement and incorporating Epsom salt baths into my routine should help keep little love in there until it's safe to push her out lol. She thinks this baby will come early. Just have to make it until January 12th to be considered full term!
