Just Found Out we're Having TWINS & I'm 21 weeks!!

WOW. What a shocker! I've been using a midwife so until our 20 week anatomy scan last week (just to find out the gender) we hadn't had any ultrasounds- so we had no clue we were pregnant with twins! Talk about a flood of emotions... anyway, this actually changes my due date meaning I will more than likely belong to the April (possibly even March) 2016 birth club... I updated showing I'm having twins instead of a singleton birth  but it didn't automatically update my EDD. Not sure if I should do that myself or if it even matters. Beyond that, if anyone else is expecting twins, let's connect! I'm a bit freaked out about all the additional information and exactly what to do next!

  • Hi there. There are several threads already that address twins, due dates, and appointments. Check those out!

  • Wow! That's a shock! I've heard of this happening even if there was a 7-8 week ultrasound and the other one was hiding. Congratulations! I can imagine this changes quite a lot for you! Do you need to change practices now?
  • Congratulations!  I can't imagine finding out about twins so late!  Were you measuring big at all?  My last pregnancy was twins, but this pregnancy is just one.  Twins are wonderful. Definitely hook up with some twins moms in real life too!  May your pregnancy be long and uneventful!

  • What a surprise! It's true that many twins come early, but some go all the way to 40 weeks. I once saw a newborn set of twins that were 8lbs a piece! It does happen! I don't think it will change your EDD because it doesn't change their gestational age. Congrats and good luck!

...and twice the back pain, twice the baby items, twice the cost, twice the feeding, the bathing, the puking, the crying, the worrying...twice of everything good and bad. My friend just had twin girls 6 weeks ago and she's doing incredibly well but it's hard work. I always wanted twins...not anymore!! I'm happy with my single sized belly :)

I actually heard from someone who had a newborn and a toddler and later on had a set of twins. They actually said having twins was easier that having a newborn and a toddler, since they're both at the same level. I'd still never wish for them, though!

  • I'm due mid May with twins. They moved my due date up two weeks from where it was (may 28)

Twice the morning sickness, twice the ligament pain, and twice the hormones! Oh yeah and I have a son who's currently 1 1/2. Plus I do in home daycare for another 1 1/2 year old and a 6 month old.

    Yes I'm losing my mind.
  • I'm excited for you!!! Congratulations!!!
  • This is my dream and DH's nightmare! In the first thing he asked at our first ultrasound was whether there was only one baby in there. Srsly, it kept him up nights.

I know twins are hard, but I'm impatient and even in terms of waiting 40 weeks to see my LO I'd much prefer multiples, but DH knows we are pretty strapped financially as is, and a second baby right now would be rough.

But twins run in his family, so I was still crossing fingers until our anatomy scan yesterday, and DH was still losing sleep over the possibility.

    Tl; dr version:
How awesome! And terrifying! To find out this late in the game;) congratulations and good luck!!!!!
  • Congrats!!! I too found out by surprise that I was having twins. Our first ultrasound missed the 2nd baby, then at our next one the tech showed us twins!! You need to find out if they have a shared placenta. I have mono-Di twins and am being monitored every 2 weeks since 16 weeks by a specialist for signs of TTTS. I was also told the latest I will go is 36 weeks so with my due date at June 1st, they would be out by May 4th. If they each have their own placenta then you're fine!! :)
  • @dshannah Twins running in families is only relevant if it's on the mother's side. The only hereditary factor is hyper ovulation. All other incidents of twins are purely by chance.

  • Congrats!!!! Very exciting, all the best to make he 3 of you
  • Congrats! I'm 19 weeks pregnant and can't imagine finding out just now! I also have a midwife but due to some very minimal spotting she had a quick ultrasound done at 7 1/2 weeks and.....TWO!
I had midwives with my first two children - they worked in a Dr's office with OB's and I delivered at a hospital. That first office closed but my new office and midwife is the same set up. I have already had two ultrasounds at the hospital in a 'high risk' office (Obstetrix) which coordinates directly with my midwife and her office. So.....as long as everything is checking out normal there's no reason I have to switch.
I have a regular 40 week due date. Could they come earlier? Oh sure. It's one of those wait and see kind of things. From the books that I've read about half of twins come before 36 weeks but I keep hearing people tell me about 'their friend' who carried theirs until 38, 39, 40 weeks....
I know after I found out I was having twins I was reading up on twins like crazy! Once or twice a week I would wake up at 5am and be up for good - too much on my mind to fall back asleep! But that's all settled down now. I'm excited! Good luck!
  • What are you having? Boys, girls? Separate placentas?
I'm having two boys, DiDi twins (separate sacks, separate placentas).
  • Congratulations!!! This happened to my mom when she had my sister and me-- it's a big surprise to not know until halfway through!
