Started Solids

Hey I'm not looking for anyone to blast me with the who guidelines or anything. My dr and I felt my lo was ready to start solids so we did last night. I just want to share my experience. We started with pureed apples and he loved it. Took a little getting used to , pushed it out once or twice but after a few tries he was opening up wide and trying to grasp the spoon to suck the food off! He started to kick his legs alot which means he's happy which made my husband and I happy. Lo will be 4 months next week. Looking forward to all the new foods he can try!

Re: Started Solids

  • I can't wait to start my LO on solids, he is already watching me when I eat and sometimes moves his mouth too! He is 13 weeks and already teething, his pediatrician confirmed it. I will probably wait a few more weeks but I might give him a little taste, glad it's going well for you!!

  • @EmilyJ15 has it helped any? My LO has reflux and I am hoping it will help us in the future too
  • @squigles28 I haven't noticed a huge improvement yet, unfortunately. I keep hoping its something she just has to adjust to. She has been having some good days, but then she will also have some really bad days. We also ran out of her acid reflux medicine at the end of the week and we were out of refills. I completely forgot to call before the doctor's office closed early on Friday. I'm hoping we noticed more improvement once we get that going again regularly.
  • DD has been on solids for a few weeks now, too. We started with cereal but have also introduced fruit by this point. She hates her bottles but is a big fan of food! She tried to steal her Daddy's pico de gallo yesterday (we didn't let her have any).

  • How wonderful!
  • @TeacherMom210 that sounds fun! I can't wait to see my lo with that kind of interest
  • Our LO will be 12 weeks tomorrow and I let her try some banana applesauce on the tip of my finger. She kept shoving my finger in her mouth and would get mad when my finger magically stopped tasting good lol. I'll wait a while longer before actually introducing food but she loved it and would not stop staring at her daddy's biscuit when we went out for breakfast on saturday.
  • We started with pears and my mom fed him the whole little Gerber jar. When I tried the next day he cried and didn't want to eat. A week later we tried carrots and as soon as he tasted them he burst into tears. Little guy hates carrots - I should have started with veggies first. It does help my guy's acid reflux. I notice he seems better.
When feeding him we keep a bottle next to him to help him wash down the food and he's doing great. Also he likes the food warmed up only. If it's room temperature he hates it.
  • I like to start with bananas but we just do cereal and oatmeal until another 6 weeks or so. (I can't believe he will almost be 6 months!)

Just a tip for Moms who are doing foods.  Stick with a certain kind for a few days-a week before switching it up.  It helps pick out possible intolerances and allergies.  DS1 had a really hard time with berries until he was over a year and would get terrible diaper burns.  They were so bad that my pediatrician sent us to an allergist, it was helpful to know exactly what was causing the problem.
  • We started solids at 3 1/2 months, she seemed interested in what we were eating and can sit up supported so we told her Dr that what we wanted to try and he said ok. She was definitely ready, she doesn't push it out and opens her mouth for the spoon. She LOVES her food and gets mad at me if I don't offer the spoon fast enough. We've tried banana, pears, peaches and apples. She absolutely loves pears but apples made her face and neck super red so we'll be staying away from anything with Apple in it. She didn't care for rice cereal and I feel like it doesn't have any real benefit. A plus is she isn't constipated anymore! She has a milk allergy so we do soy formula and it constipates her, now shes regular and her stool is almost a normal color, not green like it has been. I feel like since we've started her on solids she's doing so much better developmentally, but that could just be coincidence since she's almost 4 months.

Agreed, we try a new food after 5 days. When we tried Apple her face and neck got super red, she only had a couple bites before she started to get red so we stopped but she still got a super horrible diaper rash 2 days later. She's never had diaper rash before and it was so raw and red, poor baby :( so we will being staying away from all things Apple.
