Cradle cap and baby oil

So I used a little baby oil to DD scalp before bath and used the special brush to massage flakes loose. Washed her hair after but it still is kinda oily. Wondering how you all dealt with this? Will her hair be oily and greasy tomorrow?

Re: Cradle cap and baby oil

  • Ive found coconut oil makes it less greasy and I think it works better.

  • The doctor told me coconut oil for 7 days. Wash it out after 30 min using water only. It smells funky but it works!

  • LO had it really bad. I wanted to try coconut oil because it's a natural remedy but with working full time and everything I didn't really ever find time to put oil in her hair and deal with trying not to get it everywhere. A friend of mine recommend Mustela newborn shampoo specifically for getting rid of the flakes. I used it once on Thursday and it made a huge difference. Going to use it again tonight and I'm thinking it will finish the job. It was pricey though, I got it at Target for 10 or 11 dollars
  • We used coconut oil Friday and it worked great for the actual cradle cap but even after a bath and scrubbing the crap out of her head, her head still smells funny and is greasy! Totally worth it though!

On a related note, does anyone's LO have cradle cap in their eyebrows?

I use the baby oil gel and put it on after a bath, massage and brush in and then I get a towel and use it like I'm drying his hair. It removes the excess left of the hair itself
  • I used arbonne gele two times and it never came back made babies hair and skin so soft to
  • My little guy has cradle cap but it's not so much the flakes as it is the red, chapped looking spots on his head. Anyone else's LO have this? We use coconut oil every night - it helps a little but more so prevents it from getting worse. If I don't use it, it looks way way worse the next day!
  • I saw pp mentioned Mustela. It is the only baby bath products i use. LO had a little case of Eczema and it cleared up very well and has not come back since I started using it. She also started to show signs of cradle cap when i was using Honest Co. wash but when I switched to Mustela, it went away. I love it. I use their baby wash, lotions and even a no rinse cleanser i keep at her changing table to get her under arms and neck folds in between bath days. It smells amazing. Best stuff ever.
  • It's annoying to look at but I've always thought it was harmless, so even with my first LO I didn't do anything about it.
@backatac, that sounds like it might be eczema or something else maybe?  Have you checked with your pediatrician?

  • I swear by Mustela foam shampoo.  After dd1 having horrendous issues that helped clear it up and it never cropped up with dd2 as mustela was all I used and so far so good with ds.
  • Breastmilk also worked really well for my little guy! Just applied a little bit to his head in the bath and rinsed it the next day.
  • 1% hydrocortisone works also. Our pediatrician reccomeneded it with our first.
  • My daughter was getting cradle cap and I started giving her a bath every day and scrubbing her head with that soft brush they gave me at the hospital and it has completely gone away.  I had only been giving her a bath every few days before that, and also not scrubbing her head.
